BMW dealer oil change -- change filter too?

Hi, I was wondering if BMW dealer will change the filter as well for the price they're asking for an oil change.

Does anyone know?

If a dealer changes the oil but not the filter then it is time for another dealer.

No they run the oil through the filter then pour it back into your car. You need to get the deluxe oil change special if you want a fresh filter.

On a serious note, only a scum bag dealer would not change the filter.

I would ask your dealer. Of course they should also replace the filter. But I have known a tech or two in my time that would just change the oil and keep the new oil filter for himself! So its always a good idea to ask - so they know you will be looking.

Of course you can't tell.. but at least it puts the dealer personal on notice - that you are a concerned customer.

The oil filter is suppose to be replaced every second or third oil change, so I would ask the dealer to confirm.

lolwut? Replace the oilfilter with every oil change or do not replace the oil. Why are you replacing the oil in the first place for? Not because the viscosity changed but because there are particles that you do not want in the oil. If you do not replace the oil filter and put in fresh oil then this oil will be polluted by particles as it runs through the filter.

Imho there is no need to replace the oil unless you replace the oil filter as well unless you are a freak and replace the oil for example every 1000 miles and the oil filter only every 3000 miles.

Umm... No.

The oil filter should be changed at EVERY oil change interval.

Perhaps you are thinking about the manual trans oil on ///M cars. That is on every third oil service.

Just remember the Best oil is Fresh oil. (and be sure to use the proper type: LL1).

Just a thought, but there's a section or at least should be, the paperwork of Service agreement where "Please check this box to save old Parts" next time ask your Service Advisor about that. When you get back old parts (oil filter, O-rings, crush washer) then you'll know it was changed out properly.

Isn't the intervals for service too stretched out? I just feel 10k miles per oil change for how hard we push these cars is just too long for me. How can more technology in oil make there be less grime and sludge. Even the brake fluid change is 2 years away. Brake pads themselves on my old car had 36k miles and wasn't time to need one. I don't do track but I do drive rough almost daily since im a nightowl and no ones around.

But yes crazy if they don't change the oil filter, its so cheap! BMW makes money off service they should be adding more service intervals not less. That way they might last to 100k miles!!

I just update thru the app store nothing else. Weird if your ios didn't update yours. You need to use the blue app not the red one. Search manually thru app store and im sure you can update it there. Too bad it doesn't have remote engine start! Sending maps thru connected drive is convenient though and if I locked the car or not.

Many shops have the following order of operations from top to bottom:
- master mechanics who work on cars and are knowledgeable (usually older fellows/ladies)
- oil change low totem pole techs (basically all they know is how to change oil and flush brake fluid, they know more outside of their job, but its all they are allowed to do due to seniority)
- shop gophers (techs in name only, usually run to get parts, move cars, supplement other techs)

If you take your car to a dealer or side shop, it is most likely being handled by someone that all they know how to do is do that task, so you probably should do it yourself
