e39 or e60
It's not really about the money, it's more about the car. I'm looking to purchase either a 2001-2003 e39 530i or an e60 535i. I've found some nice e39's with around 100k miles and maintenance history for <10k. I've also found some e60's with less than 100k for around 15-20k. Any advice on what would make a better car? I'm looking for reliability and performance. I've had a 335i coupe and a 335d in the past but this is my first experience with the 5 series.

If it's between those two, I would recommend the e39. The e60 535 had a slew of high pressure fuel pump (HPFP) issues, which is actually how I ended up with a 550 instead.
See threads like this for details: http://5series.net/forums/e60-discus...roblems-99815/ Obviously, as with any older BMW, be prepared for maintenance items that could get costly. But if you're smart about you it will be well rewarded. |

I'm leaning toward the e39. I drove a couple 530s, loved the handling and the i6 seems like a great engine. They seem much easier and cheaper to work on then the 540i and the e60 535i.

Ended up purchasing a one owner 2001 e39 530i sport/premium/cold weather with only 46k miles! Got it for $11k and it's coming with a set of MRR GT1 aftermarket wheels I'm going to sell so I think I did pretty well. Pics coming when it's delivered next week.

You did VERY well! Please post some pictures of that beauty! You are SO lucky to find one with such low miles! I have an e60 530i that I've had for 9 years. It's been a great car, but I do miss my e39. The e39 will definitely be cheaper to maintain.
