polarizing filter question

alright, so i picked up a 'whatever' polarizing filter from frys this afternoon. im planning on using it for my kit 18-55 lens with my XSi. i buy it, get home, put it on my lens and it doesnt fit snug, should it? i just bought one that said 55mm polarizing filter. it fits within the focus ring, but doesnt stay. am i supposed to hold it every time i take a shot? also, i can turn the polarizing filter about itself, if that makes sense. i have no idea what thats about

I thought the 18-55 took 58mm filters. If so you need to return the one you got for the right size.

You need a 58mm filter for the lower end Canon lenses.

once you put the right one on, it will rotate about the lens - this is to change the effect it has on the sky and/or reflections.
if the sun is directly above, it's not going to do anything, and it works best when you're shooting at a 90-degree angle of the sun.

no complaints from my 17-85mm f/4-5.6. shorter money and great replacement for kit 18-55.
