Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) can make it impossible to speed

Driving at ridiculous speeds should be physically impossible
Mar 1, 2024
Reckless speeding is epidemic in the US. This simple technology could save tens of thousands of lives.
Speeding plays a role in over 12,000 US car fatalities per year, around a third of the national total. But an emergent technology could dramatically reduce that death toll, if not eliminate it entirely.
Happily, a common-sense solution is available. A technology known as Intelligent Speed Assistance (ISA) can make it difficult or impossible for drivers to drastically exceed the posted limit. Over the last few months, a bevy of federal, state, and local officials have called for ISA adoption on all new cars, or at least on those driven by public employees or those with a history of reckless driving.
From New York City to California, speed-limiting technology is having a moment.
“Active” ISA systems completely prevent further acceleration after the vehicle hits a given speed ceiling, such as five miles over the posted limit. “Passive” ISA is more permissive, relying on sounds, vibrations, or accelerator resistance to compel the driver to slow down (a determined driver can ignore those warnings and keep speeding up).
In 2022, the European Union adopted a rule requiring all new cars to be outfitted with passive ISA, starting this July. That was a watershed moment for ISA adoption — and it raised eyebrows across the Atlantic.
NHTSA has shown no signs of requiring ISA at the federal level but provided a statement that it was “initiating new research this year” into the technology, without offering further detail.

It's only a tin foil hat conspiracy until it happens.

119-c. Intelligent speed assistance device. A device, also referred
to as a "speed limiter", which is installed in a motor vehicle and
utilizes technology to cap the speed of a motor vehicle at five miles
per hour more than the speed limit in a specific zone. The technology

Took the M4CS out for a spring Italian tune up last week after it's long winters nap. I would have violated the (ISA) so many times they would have sent the swat team after me.

It's a done deal in the EU so I guess we will see.

Speed brakes in all new cars: ISA driving assistant mandatory from summer
2/7/2024
Speed assistant ISA will be mandatory in July: How does the system work?
The system will be mandatory in all new cars in the European Union (EU) from July 7, 2024.
It warns the driver of excessive speed and is intended to ensure greater safety on the road.
Unlike some driving aids, the ISA cannot be switched off permanently.
The assistant has been mandatory for newer vehicle types since July 2022.
From July, a black box will also be mandatory in all new cars.
If the car detects a speed limit, the ISA adjusts the speed.

Thanks to traffic sign recognition via camera or GPS positioning (including comparison with current maps), the ISA always knows what speed is currently permitted.
Together with the cruise control and speed limiter, the driving assistant can adjust the speed.
Speed assistant reduces speed: driver can overrule it
If the vehicle is too fast, ISA reduces engine power and gently brakes it until the permitted speed is reached.
If you still want to drive faster, you can do so by stepping on the gas or deactivating the system in the settings before each trip.

How much do you want to bet that government vehicles won't have to follow these rules?

Rules for thee but not for me!

The masses cheer it, as they are duped into thinking it's about safety.

They're bringing, peace, freedom, justice, and security to their new empire.

Your freedom to play with your phone while driving is better than ever.

This is what everyone wants.

This is what everyone does.

Every single person with one of those dumb phone-mounts in their car when the phone connects wirelessly and doesn't need to be displayed for any reason.

I could see if it was more like 20mph over the limit - but 5?!?! how are we supposed to pass in a timely fashion?

also. sometimes my camera catches a frontage rd speed limit - so now I would be on the highway and my car brakes down to 45 or 55 mph?!

this is such a BS idea - and I agree that mobile phone use is MUCH more dangerous than speed itself

On road crossings in our villages here in Germany there often are speed limiting road signs installed in the branching streets which are also visible from the main street. Guess which speed limit nearly always appears on the screen? And guess what that future "assistant" will do in this situation?

An annoying shotgun rider will be a blessing compared to that "AI".

So you are trying to overtake the guy doing 20km/h under the speed limit.

To do this you must momentarily exceed the speed limit.

Except you can’t. As you attempt this your car cuts out. You have a head on collision.

What a world.

On public roads, I agree. Driving at ridiculous speeds should indeed be physically impossible on public roads, breaking the law and putting others at extreme risk of severe life-threatening accidents.
And since we have the technology to prevent this, why not?

So, that we enthusiasts can have "our fun" on public roads? Not good enough.

Sure, you may need to briefly go 15mph to 20mph over the limit to pass someone, but other than that, now it's just speeding.

And I drive faster than most of you on most roads with my radar detector and laser jammer, so this is speaking from logic and reason, not emotion.

You bring up a good point. How would such a law deal with autocrossing or a track day?

Also
Who hasn't gone to pass some clown paying more attention to his or her phone only to have then speed up when you are beside them?

Our friends in Europe and the "progressive" states will come up with any reason to take away freedoms in such a way that it sounds like it's for the public good, but is really just a waste of time and provides a framework for additional control over the people.

Nothing like driving the speed limit when your child has been bitten by a rattlesnake. Especially in rural areas where an ambulance may not be an option.

When my son was born I was working from my home office. My wife called me and said "get here now". I unleashed all 400+ HP my Trailblazer SS had and made it to be there for him being born before he got carted away to the NICU (he was premie, but very healthy).

I will NEVER buy a car that limits my speed based on anything other than tires or gearing. There's too many situations where that speed limit has to become a speed suggestion.

It would probably be more helpful if they just enforced laws on not texting and driving rather than speeding.
