iPhones no longer come with a charger, but is it an issue?
Apple said one reason they didn't include a charger in the box is that people already have a charger. They do include a USB C cable, but many people don't have a USB C charger.
However, many people will be upgrading from an old iPhone, and you can still use your old iPhone cable and charger. So this isn't really an issue unless you're coming from Android. Thoughts? |

It's just apple being cheap asses and masking it as saving the planet. Don't really care though because I've been wireless charging since my iphone X. Only time I plug it in is in the car and I don't need the brick for that.

It's annoying, but historically, Apple has been doing seemingly annoying things for a long time and it often turns out not as bad as we think in hindsight:
We have 4 Apple lightning devices in the house. Only one uses the 5W charger that comes with the iphone. All the others are plugged into a USB hub or integrated USB plugs in our outlets. I actually have old chargers from all our iphone purchases still in the original iphone boxes. I don't like the 5W chargers that come with them because they charge slower than the bigger 12W charger. Because I use my phone often for work, I want it to charge fast, so I upgrade anyway. With most devices being either USB or USB-C chargeable, so many products come with universal wall chargers anyway. I have extra chargers from so many devices, they end up sitting in a drawer unused for years. This causes a tremendous amount of waste. Why not just buy what you need? Does that mean apple has dropped the price $20, the cost of a new 5W charger? Dunno. All of my Apple Lightning cables disintegrate anyway, so I have a bunch of Amazon Basics lightning to USB cables for all our apple devices with some to spare. Apple's cables are literally the worst. Apple tends to persuade its customers towards new tech. By ditching the charger, it might push those who normally might resist otherwise to integrate wireless charging in their routine, be it overnight, in the car, or desktop charging etc. They did the same thing when they ditched the home button, the phone jack (still controversial, but honestly unless you are an audiophile, the wireless option is more convenient), the CD drive, and the computer case (iMac's hardware is built into the monitor).

I've been using wireless charging since my Palm Pre back in ancient times, and had a new Qui wireless charger dock waiting on my desk when my launch day iPhone X arrived. I never even took the charger out of the box.
The annoying one for me is my work 24/7 on-call iPhone 7+ during COVID-geddon, because it doesn't have wireless charging. I have a lightning dock on my desk at work, so it was always charged at the end of the day when I left the office. Working from home, I need to use a lightning cable to charge it...now every other day as the battery ages. There is a hack-ish retrofit to add Qui wireless charging to lightning iPhone 5/6/7 models, and it has been tempting me ever since COVID started.....

This has caused a issue at my workplace. People starting to get new phones issued by the department (they had blackberries) and now they have a phone they can't even charge. Fuck apple. They claim it's for environment but cmon it's all about money.

So your coworkers just let their phones die? They still come with the cables. You just need a USB port. They sound like idiots honestly. If you have ever bought an usb powered device they all come with chargers. I literally have a drawer full of chargers. It's a waste.

Exactly...you buy anything new and you should be able to use it "out of the box". Reached out to my AT&T rep and has her send us a charger. Didnt "need" it, but just for principal.

Or, next level genius’ realize it still has qui wireless and lightning port so use your old chargers and ignore the usb c cable provided. By now most have chosen their camp and refuse to acknowledge merits of the other. Can’t be many droid folks switching to the Apple camp.

I've pretty much switched my house stuff over to USB-C anyway so if I ever get a new iPhone, it won't bother me. I bought a macbook charger and a usb-c to lightning cable to charge my iPhone at home and a usb-c car charger and cable for the F33. Now my F39 has the wireless charger and three USB-C ports in it already.

Wireless charging is GARBAGE... how could anyone think otherwise?
I have the apple approved 7.5W charger and its charging speed is lol at best... as far as car wireless charging, I hope you don't mean BMW which effectively works better as a microwave than an actual charger. I use the larger ipad brick to charge to my iphone and only then does it have acceptable speed. |
