I never realized that sucking in water could cause hydro-lock and basically destroy your engine. Not that I plan on taking my Z4 for a swim, but good to keep in mind for those torrential rain periods.

Oh yeah. People hydro-lock engines all the time by driving in deep water or puddles and the engine sucks it in.

It doesn't take that much when the piston is at TDC. Whatever was left probably mixed in with the oil possibly causing that sludge.

Torrential rain tends to create a lot of standing water all over the roads, parking lots, etc that you may end up driving through by accident or on purpose. I'd be more worried about hydroplaning personally, but yeah.

I think you give the average person too much credit! How many people know the combustion cycle and that water isn't compressible?
The problem, if it isn't obvious, is sucking water into the intake. it gets inside the cylinder, and when the piston comes up to compress it that doesn't happen. rod bends or snaps and sometimes punches a hole in the side of the block. |

When I worked on Brickell and 12th street in Miami, the intersection often flooded during heavy rain. From my window I had a birds-eye view of folks trying to barrel through standing water, in an oblivious fashion as if they were in amphibious vehicles. My office mates and I would wage bets on those who were most likely to get stuck. Once water covered the hood they were more often than not done. Unless you have a Defender, Tacoma, Wrangler, etc with a snorkel and/or serious ground clearance, itÂ’s hydra-lock city. IÂ’m sure many of them got their feelings hurt when taking the car to the dealer for service assuming they could get engine repairs/replacement under the OEM vehicle warranty.:rolleyes And those without the right insurance coverage were equally hosed.

If the piston seizes, it usually just stalls and doesnt break a rod because it goes fairly gradually with extended high revs (that said, it's cyl#6, the one that runs hottest..) So hydrolocking still looks like a plausible cause, 2 cylinders next to eachother were locked, so the gulp of water went to the back (maybe inertia?) Quote:

Nonsense, I've driven through 6-8 inches of standing water, sucked into intake, engine trashed. 3 series 335d. I've also seen a couple of Bm's stranded in similar depths of water. No doubt with the same outcome as mine.
