Unbelievable ___ bike thieves

So, in our building we have some reserved bike racks in a secured hallway and one of them belongs to us. I have been keeping my Trek fitness bike and my MTB mounted on the rack with a good Abus lock on the Trek and the MTB behind it. No way to get to the MTB without cutting the lock on the Trek.

So ... some jackass decides to try and steal the MTB and starts cutting the Abus (I know it was the MTB because the cut the cable lock off it). When he/they couldn't cut through the Abus, the rocket scientist decided that aluminum would be easier to cut and started working on the top tube of the frame.

Obviously ruined. Spent a week test riding replacement bikes. Really loved the Specialized Elite Carbon but it turns out that Trek will automatically cover 20% of a replacement bike for one that is damaged which put me back to another Trek (which I do like as well). Wound up buying an FX S 4.

Since I also sprung for the integrated speed/cadence sensor, trying to decide whether to buy a true computer or a mount for my phone. Keep looking on CL for a good price on a Garmin Edge 520/Lezyne Macro/Polar M450. Any other suggestions?

It's an access hallway to one of the storage locker rooms. Can only access with common area keys, but I wasn't relying on that as much as having a really good lock. Never thought some jackass would decide to try and actually cut the Trek frame to get it off the bike rack to get to the Rocky Mountain.

Gawd, that sucks. Thieves are true vermin. I'm lucky that my bike is in my office with me, so I don't have to worry. But my very first 10-speed I had as a kid got stolen and I'll never forget the anger I felt when that happened.

I ride Treks as well. I have a Crossrip 1 with Schwalbe G-One tires that's my gravel bike, and a Domane SL7 for pure road. Been considering some sort of off-road/MTB bike, but I'm not sure that type of riding is for me.

I run Garmin computers. What works for you is all dependent on what data you need and whether you need a touch screen or not. I jumped from the Edge 520 to the Edge 1000 simply because my aging eyes can see the Edge 1000 screen better. Otherwise they perform the same functions, more or less. I wear a Garmin watch and have Garmin lights, so the integration of all those is nice.

I do like the Trek, but all things being equal would have bought the Specialized but it wasn't >$400 better after the Trek coverage.

I really don't need live GPS tracking, more want speed and cadence through BTLE or ANT+ but don't want to spend significant money on it having just bought a new bike.

Check out DC Rainmaker's review of the Stages L10. About halfway down the page.

Wound up picking up a Garmin Edge 25 off craigslist. Does everything I need it to do and pretty well actually.

Unfortunately, you had to go and mention Varia lights ... now I am thinking about that tail light for in traffic rides.

The new Garmin Varia tail/radar is brighter and pretty sensitive. I have both the old one and the new one. The new one will pick up a rider or riders coming up behind you, but not until they're close. It'll pick up cars a good ways off. If you do a lot of group rides or ride in heavy traffic, the newest one might drive you nuts with alerts. Personally I like it better, but I usually ride alone and traffic here is light.
