Never been more proud of my City of Baltimore

Article from The Baltimore Sun. The turn where the trial camera was set -up is not an easy turn,

Baltimore’s Board of Estimates approved a $6.6 million contract extension Wednesday to fund speed cameras on Interstate 83.
The contract, which was approved by a vote of 4-1, calls for six cameras to be installed at various locations along the Jones Falls Expressway. Only two will be operational at any given time, based upon a plan approved by state lawmakers earlier this year.

Drivers will have a lengthy grace period to get accustomed to the cameras and adjust their driving habits, said Steve Sharkey, director of the city’s Department of Transportation. For the first 90 days, drivers who speed past the cameras will receive warnings, not citations. Speed-tracking signs will also be installed in the area, letting drivers know they are speeding, he said.
“The total goal for this is to make people slow down,” Sharkey said.

City officials conducted a one-week camera trial near a former Pepsi bottling plant along the interstate, a spot notorious for crashes. During that period, 151,000 of the 360,000 vehicles that passed the camera were traveling more than 12 mph over the speed limit, and 102,000 were driving at least 15 mph over the speed limit, city officials reported to the Board of Estimates.
The top speed recorded was 173 mph, according to city officials.

Oh yeah the camera is a pox.

However 173 mph inside the city line on that expressway is miraculous.

It will be a voluntary tax - do 5-9mph over and I doubt you will get a ticket

Who does 5-9 over on empty highway?!

These laws are idiotic. Speed limits should vary based on traffic congestion and road conditions. Going 55mph in a modern car on open highway is the opposite of efficiency.

These traffic cameras have proven not to save any lives but as a scam to generate more revenue.
We have 25mph speed limits in NYC and cameras on every block.

I didn't say I agreed with cameras on the highway - I lived through the BS speed camera vans in Canada back in the early 2000's

I was responding to the person who was making a point of it being a mandatory tax for the poor and middle class - it isn't or won't be - we all have the choice to drive the exact speed limit if we don't want a ticket

that said, I drive 5-9mph over regularly and only have to lift off the throttle if I see a cop, and never get tickets in those situations
I do get tickets every 2 or 3 years on my car or bike - and it is always for doing 15mph over - which is my fault and choice

173 mph on the JFX? Wow that is quite impressive. I'm assuming the cameras are only being installed on the Southbound portion and not North towards PA?

M235 at 120+ with bouts of 145+ from Parkton to the PA line is actually a nice early Sunday morning excursion.

Though not sure if you remember the Corvette driver who fled the state cop heading south on 83 and was shot and killed at Bellona and North Charles Street some years back.

Dude, I would be doing way over a hundred during the grace period. Lol. Let them send me a warning about doing 150. Fuck those cameras. You really think they give 2 fucks about people getting
Killed!?!? They want the money from the tickets. Another BS way of fucking over the working people. How about this. All the money they get from the tickets should help the homeless or starving in Baltimore? Then I would say, I am totally cool with it. That shit hole city needs all the help it can get. But the money will never do anything to help anyone. Politicians/police are the biggest crooks on the fucking planet. Rant over

If I'm not mistaken they've done this in other cities and it's only increased crashes from people slowing down. Speed isn't necessarily the reason crashes happen. It's mostly from people that chill in the passing lane.

You've obviously never driven in Washington D.C. or Baltimore. "Open highway" is a pipedream.

Normally something like this would infuriate me, but I really feel it's needed in Los Angeles. I've never seen a place so full of people who don't give a damn. Every day I feel like I'm driving in Mad Max.

So many clinically insane drivers, so little traffic enforcement. Such cameras around LA are needed badly.

Another money grab by democrats. We had them in Phoenix for a while a decade ago, but the public backlash was so strong, they were eventually removed. And all you had to do to get out of a ticket was testify “not me” when the camera shot was shown in court, and your case was immediately dismissed.

Follow the money - look into how much of the proceeds goes to the speed camera company. It’s not trivial. Funkdat.

25 already?
Holy crap.

I recall once a cop pulled me over right in front of Holland on your side and asked me what the speeding limit was. I said “35”.
And he yelled “Thirty!”. And then repeated “THIRTY”, “THIRTY”.
And then he just let me go.

Funny.
I remember this as clear as this was yesterday…but it was like before 9/11 or right after when they started letting us in below Canal

Sometimes I’m pretty slow on the uptake of things. I have to assume that you’re joking right? I mean this is your attempt at satire correct? There is absolutely nothing good about red light cameras or speed cameras in any city. City officials that lie and say it’s about safety know full well it’s nothing more than a revenue generator and the people who get hurt the worst are the very people these same revenue addicted politicians claim to want to help the most and that is the lower middle class. Thankfully there are counter measures for those of us in the know to deal with these intrusive and offensive revenue generating cameras.

You only have two options as a citizen.

1. Freedom
2. Perceived Security

Choose wisely because if you consciously choose option number 2 you can never go back to option 1 without fighting for it.

I probably should have been clearer, it is the last sentence in the article that made me proud.

This is a curvy raised highway. Severe potholes. dirty shoulders that will cause you to lose traction if you drift onto them.
If the article is accurate that 173 mph was achieved near the location where a test camera was set up is remarkable.
Im guessing it was a motorcycle.

Compared to the rest of the world…

1. We spend the most on police
2. We spend the most on homeland security
3. We spend the most on guns
4. We spend the most on the military

…isn't it to preserve our freedom?
