Conspiracy theory:

Maybe it's not just the profits but a preparation for more "trump" policy?

I wouldn't label it as a conspiracy theory, but the dog is on the right scent.

GM didn't exit Europe. They still sell Cadillacs, Corvettes and Camaros in Europe.

That would be weird, should Trump go full retard with import tarif, the reciprocal tarif on US goods to europe would wipe GM out of the area at once, if they do not have a local company to produce inside the tariff zone.

Yeah, like 10 a year Nice cars but with the cost of gas in europe they are not hot cakes.

Not clear what Peugeot is looking for in the deal. When Renault bought Nissan, they bought a company that was making very different models (luxury with Infinity, SUV/pickups), and was operating in a very different region set (Asia, North America). Opel and Peugeot operate in the exact same geographic area and propose very similar ranges of models.

Those are not made in europe. This is about GM making products IN europe.
First they let Saab go bankrupt, and now they sold Opel/vauxhall.
Afaik they now have 1 factory left in italy: GM powertrain in Turin (small facility), I think that was excluded from the deal.
My estimate is that it will be sold for a penny to Fiat in a year or so...

So going from 11 factories/65k employees to about nil in about 10 years...
You can pretty much call that a business fail

Already since 2009 there were plans for citroen to use production capacity in opel plants. So its probably more about sharing production capacity etc.

I dont think Renault bought nissan, but they have a 'strategic alliance' (Although renault has more to say within nissans part than vice versa)
Actually Nissan and Renault have had a very long partnership, going back to the 70's where they shared dealerships and factory production capacity with the brand datsun, later becoming Nissan.
So thats where that comes from. In Europe Nissan operates in the same market as Renault, and Infinity is a big fail (hardly sold over here).

I think GM is still keeping their Nurburgring Test Center and Design Centers in Germany. But with GM selling... hopefully Opel can live on. I do think that PSA end plan is that they now have a HUGE dealer support for their cars here in Germany/Europe. Something they had not had before.

I'm sure they want to keep selling good handling cadillacs and corvettes that were 'designed on the ring'

I think that is only case in Germany. In lots of other countries there are quite a lot citroen and peugeot dealers.
They say they wont close dealerships, but I live in a 25k people town and there is a peugot, citroen and opel dealership.
The citroen dealer started to sell hyundai a few years back but eventually was not allowed to do so anymore.
I dont think there is a single automotive conglommerate that now has that many exclusive dealerships in this little town. Not even VAG.

Opel GT was one of the cars that I owned that I wish I still had. Bought a new 1969 red 1.9L Opel GT had it for 2 years before buying a new '71 Corvette. Loved it!!

They're not hard to buy. I would think they would've went up in value.
