Wind is a killer, even with a decent tripod.
Wind and slow shutter speeds just don't work. Even if the camera is screwed down to a granite block, the wind will grap and shake the lens.

Great colors here though.

gottcha, yeah, was just checking, some of the owl features seemed soft focused, but wasn't sure if it were due to the adaptor on the large lens or lack of sharpening in post processing, and etc.

I like the subject owls are fun.

It's soft because it's shot at 700mm and 1/100th second after sundown. Plus, owl feathers are soft and less defined than other bird, so they fly silently.

that's a very good reason....

and interesting to know about the soft feathers on the owls... Just reminded me of one of the worst jokes i've heard in a long time...

Why don't you ever hear bunny rabbits having sex?

because they have cotton balls!

I apologize for the joke.... it's a bit unfortunate.

More from Africa. This is a white (albino) lion cub. They are so soft and fluffy.

Great (horned) owl shot Dave. Sorry couldn't resist. My mom is a big fan of them. I'm waiting to find a burrowing one out here.

Some unusually good weather here, it's often just wind and rain here this time of year.

This is Canon 7D + 10-22 @10mm, 65 sec, f/8 and 2 step GND filter.

But I think it was already too dark cause I like the foregrund to be lighter.

DC, nice shot, I see you were +2/3EV...did you have any shot higher?

Remmib, that's a very nice shot! Was it one of many, of did you calculate the 65 sec exposure?

Nah, I was down to 1/100th sec and holding 700mm of focal length. +1EV would have been better, but would have resulted in even slower SS. I was at ISO 1600, so I would have sacrificed detail at 3200 or 6400. With the 5D MkII I push ISO more, but with the 7D ISO 1600 is about the limit for getting good detail.

Here's a panorama from my trip to the Grand Canyon last week. Panos don't really work unless you view full screen:

One of a few, starting at 30sec going up to over 90 sec and then the sky started getting blow out.

Cool, Dave. That's a lot of glass to hold on to by hand in those kind of light conditions!

Cheers
D.

Thanks. I'm allergic to cats too. I found out that day that I'm allergic to cheetahs as well, but not allergic to lions.

After seeing those great shots by remmib and dcstep, I think that I'm going to have to step up my game. I've got a new camera (Panasonic G10) and will start using it more often.

That's a good tool, particularly for street shots, scenics, panoramas and nature, when you can get close.

A lake in a really rural part of Tallahassee. I'm gonna mess around later and see how it looks in B&W.

Given all the stumps out there in the water, I'm thinking that it's manmade.

B&W, high-contrast might be cool. I find that water and sky really benefit from being right at sunrise or sunset. The longer shadows and warmer light make the task easier.
