Do you donate to charities?
I want to start donating to a couple charities, but it's hard to find which are the 'good' ones, the ones that aren't a scam
Do you donate to charities? How did you choose them? |

I do a Christmas donation in place of Christmas cards and open it up to Friends / Acquaintances to decide on the charity. It normally ends up being air ambulance or childrens hospital charities.
We also do a lot through work for local charities (locality to each office) |

I donate to the ASPCA every month. How did I choose them? Come on now, have you seen the commercials? Who can say "no" those sad little puppies and kittens while the sappy music plays in the background. They got me good.
I also do an annual donation to my local animal shelter. |

I typically donate to individual organizations that I want to support, rather than charities - because no matter how good a charity is, there is still some that will be siphoned off the top in order to run the business - even if minimal.

Yes time and money. I usually start locally as that is the easiest way generally to see if they are legit and the money/time goes to where it is supposed to be.
Also if you have a family there are organizations that are good for kids to see and do. It is a good family activity as well. One is Feed my Starving Children and you can go in for a couple of hours and work as a family together. This one is international to. https://charity.org/workplace-giving...rving-children |

Roughly 75% of their incoming donations go towards their programs. They do good work, they pay their people well, they advertise a lot to raise awareness and keep the donations flowing. I've got no issues with that. As I said, I also donate to my local shelter. |

One of mine and my wife’s passions are supporting animal shelters; we even adopted three shelter cats. We donate to our local animal shelter, as well as the ASPCA.
I also donate to Disabled Veterans. |

I'd rather donate time. Both wife and I have worked at local animal shelter walking the dogs and taken a few in for short term when needed.

BTW, I should have noted in my response that I commend you in your interest to donate (time or money). As a follow-up to the responses herein, you may also find certain charities or other entities in need of donations more local to where you live.

CNY Cat Coalition gets most of my hard cash donations; Salvation Army is my 'hoarders emotional support' for the crap I'm digging out of the basement that isn't junk - DK if it will work as well w/o the tax write-off, and I haven't looked to see if I'm now using the generic deduction or still itemizing.
