No he definately isnt. My prayers, seriously, is that the next crash happens right on top of you, honestly. As long as the pilot is chill.

I still don't believe the pilot lost both engines. the pratt and whitney engine is extremely reliable and has a MTBR of 60,000hrs. additionally, if both engine fails the pilot should be able to glide his plane to safety.

Heck, the space shuttle upon re-entry glides to the FL or Edwards AFB without any propulsion system.

aerodynamics is aerodynamics. Unless a plane is purely "fly by wire" any plane/jet/bomber/airliner will be able to glide to earth in any event of any power failure.

the pilot is a newb and should be banned from flying until he behaves himself. He should stick to the simulators from now on
First off, if you can research random crap like MTBR's you should have been able to find out that the F-18 IS fly by wire. Depending on the circumstances you cannot always glide down. If you lose control of the aircraft eventually your forward speed will get low enough that you lose any lift and the plane will fall.

Second, watch this video:
[u2b]<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/ek-HIgPKY1U&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/ek-HIgPKY1U&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>[/u2b]

Pay attention at around 6 seconds and you can see the bird coming. The plane is a 2 seat training F-16. They pull up to get some lift and restart the engines. You can see how fast the plane drops once they lose momentum.

Also educate yourself and read this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_strike

Quote:
Jet engine ingestion is extremely serious due to the rotation speed of the engine fan and engine design. As the bird strikes a fan blade, that blade can be displaced into another blade and so forth, causing a cascading failure. Jet engines are particularly vulnerable during the takeoff phase when the engine is turning at a very high speed.

The force of the impact on an aircraft depends on the weight of the animal and the speed difference and direction at the impact. The energy of the impact increases with the square of the speed difference. Hence a low-speed impact of a small bird on a car windshield causes relatively little damage. High speed impacts, as with jet aircraft, can cause considerable damage and even catastrophic failure to the vehicle. However, according to the FAA only 15% of strikes (ICAO 11%) actually result in damage to the aircraft. The impact of a 5 kg (12 pound) bird at 240 km/h (150 mph) equals that of a 1/2 ton (1000 pound) weight dropped from a height of 3 meters (10 ft).
And another result from what a bird can do:

Seminole, I generally respect what you've got to say as you're clearly a bright guy. That said, this MF is a troll, don't bother. There are plenty of veterans here (myself included), and I honestly think limited_slip gets a rise out of poking a stick at us and people that support our service men and women . He sat around all day researching and came up with with a bunch of dicked-up, irrelevant, and patently false "facts" that he can use to troll with. To quote a line from a movie "don't give the prick the satisfaction."

This thread seriously needs to die.

I hadn't looked at the dates of his posts. They pissed me off enough (I guess what he wanted to do) that it made me want to put him in line. If I saw it was a few days ago I would have let it go. Someone needs to ban him already.

So did we find out if it is pilot error or mechanical error?

If it is pilot error what responsibility should he bear?

If it is mechanical error what responsibility should the government bear?

I just found out today that the house the plane crashed into is next door to my grand aunt's house. She was put up in a hotel for quite a few days due to this incident. I feel bad for the people that died. Its a real shame to go out this way.

It was a korean family -- as per the korean news... dad was at work, mom was in the house to take care of her 2 month baby, (and maybe a 2 year old as well if i'm not mistaken), and her grandmother came from korea to help the mom take care of the child(ren). All but the father was killed -- so sad.

The father was interviewed and told the press that he doesn't want the pilots to feel guilty in any way -- in tears. As for compensated, it's unfortunate that he lost his entire family (plus more), but he will never have money troubles again... still, money doesn't relieve everything.

Here's an interesting article from the San Diego paper regarding the crash.

Finally some details are coming out.

Pilot was told 3 times that he could land at North Island. Looks like some heads got rolled.
