You know Dave, it will be your fault if I have to go out and buy a 500.
The background, snow falling and the color of the juvenile are great. You lucked out and had a perfect OOF background. The glint in the eye brings it out from the face.

Another stellar shot, Dave. I know you mentioned it before, but how did you get the falling snow to show so well?

There are worse things that could happen to you.

If you get one you'll find that great bokeh and OOF BG is easy as pie. That "glint" in the eye is a snowflake.

Mark, I'm using f/4 here for shallow DOF and +2EV because of he snow clouds. The flakes show so well because of the shallow DOF and bokeh behind the in-focus flakes. It was snowing relatively hard, but the flakes are pretty small.

No, I think it was an EV adjustment. I remember the image where he explained it. It was the one with the hawk (or eagle) flying with snow building up on his nose.

EDIT: Oops, beat me to it. Yep, thought it was an EV bump.

Yeah, 1D MkIV and a 500. With the MTF chart the way it is on the 500, I bet it is easy. I think the only lens that comes close to it is the 400 2.8

Interesting Josh, I like this exposure although I'd try and remove that red spot on the post. The purple/magenta gel looks good.

i don't clone things like that. when i go out and do UE style shoots with a model, i treat everything as if it were a UE shoot of the surroundings themselves. everything stays exactly as it was when i got there.

*and the gel is a split tone in LR3. highlights are a muted orange and shadows are a bluish-gray. thanks.

This morning's latest:

Goldfinch enjoying the last of the thistle by dcstep, on Flickr

Canon 7D, 500mm f/4L IS, ISO 800, 1/2000 second, f/6.3 0EV because of the back light on the thistle. Processed with DxO to bring out shadows.

Dave, you must have the most patience of anyone to get all these action shots.

Unlike birds...fish just kind of swim in one little area, and in the comfort of my living room

Nice light Joey.

Have you tried making an HD video? With the captive subject it should be a piece of cake.

Thanks...I made a video of me feeding my copperband a while back. I guess I never thought of doing another one.

havent edited anything yet... that one was straight out of camera with just fixing the white balance from 5200 -> 5500.

I'll be going through the rest later today and will post a few.

EDIT: ok i lied, apparently my lightroom has it set to automatically bump up clarity and vibrance.
