Question What is your camera model?

I'm currently in the market for a Digital SLR and curious to know what the majority of the people on the board are purchasing. I'm leaning towards Canon, but Nikon is coming out with some nice stuff!

Budget: $800 with goodies.

What ya got?

I have a Canon 5D Mk2, but before that I had a 50D. You can find good deals on them so depending on what your "goodies" are, you might look at that. Also depends on if 800 is your absolute limit. The EOS Rebel T1i is a great camera as well.

t2i FTW, 1080p video and since the features rival the more expensive 5d...$849 with kit lens. you can also get the nikon d5000 with multi angle lcd and also shoots at 720p video. Don't really know much about it but it's getting good reviews and its only $700

I have a Canon 5D right now and I'm planning to add the 7D to the kit in the future. At $800 you should look at the T1i or maybe T2i (don't know how much it runs for).

Got the T2i, great features for under $1000. The EF-S lenses are great, obviously the L's too.

Canon XTi...a few generations old now but still a fairly capable dSLR. It's my fist dSLR and I've contemplated moving up to the 7D (although FF would be nice). I'm putting money into better glass. IMO, that's the way to go if you're starting out. The lenses can be used on your future dSLR(s) if you choose them well.

On the topic of the much debated Canon vs Nikon, both are great companies and you can't really go wrong with either one. Personally, I've just always used Canon. I have also preferred their IQ over Nikon, but bear in mind that, at the levels I'm talking about, IQ is very subjective. Like I said, both put out great products.

If you go the Canon route, get a body for around $400 or so and put the rest into some good, but used, glass. If you like to shoot wide, I highly recommend the 10-22mm EF-S lens. I have it and a 16-35L and sometimes miss the lower focal range of it.

An $800 budget doesn't leave a ton of options but you can do well there if you shop wisely. I have a Nikon D80 and a ton of Nikon glass personally but I shoot a 5D Mk II for work. Being familiar with both systems and considering your budget I would recommend investing in Nikon kit. I really feel like the Nikon stuff on the lower end is better built and is a bit more intuitive to use. As far as image quality goes its kinda a wash, Nikon and Canon both have strengths and weaknesses. I also like that there are a lot of options for backwards compatibility with Nikon glass that the Canon's lack (or at least used to lack... not really familiar with the current lineup in your price range.) Another thing worth noting is that Nikon's flash system is broader in terms of offerings and is generally less expensive across the board. So yeah, I'd recommend a second hand D80 unless you really really want HD video capability.

As an aside, one really cool thing about "DX" crop sensor Nikons is that they use the best parts of the lens to create images. I regularly use (non-zoom) 35mm, 50mm and 60mm macro lenses on my Nikon and all 3 smoke the Canon L glass on the full frame Canon 5D in terms of distortion and vignetting—a cool advantage of the lower resolution. Of course cropping the middle of the pics will achieve similar results on the Canon but who shoots that way? I have to say though, for the money, the Canon makes some stunning images—very sharp and great detail at higher ISO.
