Lightbulb First hard details on BMW I20 (iNEXT)

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Updated future BMW model info thread:

First hard details on I20.

August 2020
  • Some details about I20 (iNEXT). Production starts in July 2021. Two models are known at the moment. One will have 295hp, the other 430hp (potentially there could be three drivetrain versions but I only see two implemented right now). Both seem to be dual-motor. 20" to 22" wheels. Option choices will be at the level of X5 (2-axle air suspension, soft close doors, Sky Lounge headliner, B&W audio, etc). A notable new option is called "BMW Natural Interaction" - as usual, we should expect this to show up on all higher end BMWs at approximately the same time in 2021.

Can't forget about the grills apparently they will house new autonomous driving tech.

Looks like a full-featured/option BMW. All it really needs is real-world +/- 500km of range and it should attract most buyers. Not interested in having a "range" war.

I hope they are built on a "normal" looking chassis and not made as if they were out of the 2050 hot wheel catalog

I don't think you'll get your wish. Current renders based on spy shots.

I mean is that saying much though... most of our expectations weren't high.

I only saw the rear end at first and was impressed that it looked somewhat normal...I'll plead the fifth for the front end

With electric cars the drive train is talked about as hp, number of motors and range. Anything else?

ICE had # cylinders, engine layout, sound, power-train characteristics, NA/supercharged/turbo charged, transmission type, number of gears and how the transmission operated, including drive modes.

Assuming an electric Honda with same hp & range will be extremely similar to everyone else's? Seems like the reasons to buy one brand of car over another are getting smaller as the drive train gets more generic.

I figure 1 of our cars could easily be electric and range doesn't matter, then we are only buying the power train based on hp, me driving it less than half the time, it rarely leaving the city, not sure I care for hp (especially with great torque from electric) past "acceptable".

Agree the rear is not horrible, pretty much looks like current BMW design language, the side has a Lexus RX/Nissan floating roof instead of a kink, and like you said, the front end is what we've all come to expect, just not in a good way. Hopefully the range and interior is impressive, and priced competitively.

It's going to have to be if they are going to convince people to buy that thing over a Tesla.

Why can't car makers other than Tesla understand that people want to buy vehicles that look like cars? I think one of the factors that makes Tesla so immediately attractive to buyers is that they make fast, fun to drive cars that don't look like some sophomoric vision of the "future."

The front-end of this render is unforgivably bad- reminds me of that poor soul playing banjo in Deliverance. BMW certainly seems to be in a hurry to be the ugliest German Brand if not ugliest overall.

While I agree with your statement, Tesla is not a beauty contender either. I mean, far from it.
And Tesla’s interior is probably one of the most repugnant interiors I have ever seen...

The interior is quite bland, however, it is done to cut costs and make it more "affordable" (still expensive imo). Once the software is written the first time, it is free to copy-paste it into the next vehicle.

I absolutely agree that Tesla's exteriors are generic and uninteresting, and their interiors are as thrilling as a friggen iPad on laminate counter top. They also don't look like a pink and gold-satin hairdryer with a great need for some cosmetic dentistry.

Watch one of Munro's Tesla teardowns - he compares its motors to the motors of other manufacturers, and there's a lot of variation in the design. It's just that all of it is not the kind old gearheads are used to.

Is the iNext being built on an ICE platform? I still think BMW should invest in a BEV platform. It seems like the ICE platforms will only compromise many aspects of an EV, even if it is cheaper for BMW to produce.
