Damn, I guess people give in sometimes! But damn!!! Does this affect AMGs? I think they are sent to a different plant for their powerplant, right?

What was actually going on was a basic scam: The cars were damaged before they got to quality control. The quality control worker (in on the scam) selected out those cars as not passing and therefore needing repair. Daimler contracts to an outside contractor to fix them (they can't just go back on the assembly line after they are built.)
There are always cars not passing for various reasons and it's cheaper and more efficient to pull them and fix them under contract with a repair business specializing in that sort of thing. With highly robotic factory assembly being pretty consistent, it's usually little things just like what the scammers were doing (scratches, loose bolts, etc..) that can happen. Easier to just contract out to fix those issues. Daimler wondered why they were paying out more to the contractor than normal, and they investigated. There are cameras all along the assembly line. A UK paper had a longer story on it. Here's the beginning of the story from the paper: "A senior mechanic and two production line workers have been arrested and quizzed over the sabotage at the Sindelfingen works in the southern German state of Baden-Wuerttemberg. The scam involved millions of pounds in damages and bribes from the unnamed out-of-house contractor which included Viagra sex potency pills, luxury travel, football match tickets, drinks, high-end clothes and luggage." Problem is that this kind of stuff could soon be more common as all manufacturers cut back on production, threaten to lay-off thousands, and cut benefits and pay. Sabotage in all forms happens in manufacturing: http://libcom.org/library/car-factor...r-sabotage-usa http://www.philly.com/dailynews/nati..._sabotage.html |
