I agree with all of them except the CL vs 5. IMO, they're in two totally different segments.. it should be E < 5. 6 should actually be compared to CL, in which case CL wins. I don't think BMW really has any direct competition to the SL

A - No competitor (< Mini Cooper I guess)
B < 1
C < 3
E = 5
CLS >/= 5
CLK < 6
S > 7
GLK = X3 (both fail by default on account of ugliness)
ML < X5
GL - No competitor
SL - No competitor (it's not the 6)
SLK < Z4 (out of preference. I think it's debatable)

When I was a lot younger the SLR was my dream car (mainly because I was obsessed with Merc for some unknown reason...I was 13).

The CLK63 Black Series might not look good, but it's supposedly one of the most exhilarating cars to drive. That doesn't necessarily means it's one of the fastest, it just makes your blood pump.

And then there's the SL65 AMG Black Series. Don't even need to explain it.

Even though Merc wins on a car by car comparison, i still prefer BMW. But BMW is sinking in my eyes and will continue to do so if they keep migrating towards the mindset of making M version so the X6 instead of making a CSL M3 to compete with the performance of Corvettes, Porsches and the versions of the GTR.

fwiw, I was looking for a new daily driver last month. I didn't want a cop magnet and blood pressure raiser (I have a 993 for that sort of thing), so that eliminated a M5 or 550i with a MT and ZSP. I ended up with the E Class sport version.

When comparing the E over the 5 (the non-canyon flogging version of the 5), the E wins. It has a much more solid feel, greater conveniences, and with the AMG sport package has a stiff enough (and lowered) suspension not to be too boring. Also comes with 18" staggered wheels and paddle shifters.

It just felt way better built, and more like what you want in a comfortable daily cruiser. It's also way, way much safer. The 5er has door pillars that seem weak; in all, the Benz is a stronger built car (hope the new 5er will address that and no longer get 'marginal' safety ratings.)

But for the flailing around the corners and the tighter steering fun factor, the 5 wins hands down.

What I noticed about Mercedes is that their interiors are built to feel solid, but the buttons feel flimsy and cheap. It's the other way around with BMWs; The panels have give in them and there's usually potential rattles, but the buttons and knobs feel really strong and well-put together.

Maybe the C series? But both the E and S have good buttons (very hard material); plus there's not much button pushing anyway (except controls from the steering wheel and window controls; everything else is pretty much auto preset or controlled thru the COMAND unit.) I'll wager that the buttons probably even come from the same vendor that BMW uses(?)

I have full leather with the leather pleats on the door panels (soft and padded and quiet.) The one I have is a new MY09.

But the solid feel I'm really referring to comes from the car overall. The chassis, etc.. I feel like I'm in something solid and not a tin box. Like the old Benzes from the 1980s.
