Genesis Coupe crash/no air bags!
Obviously the car has air bags but even with this substantial impact the air bags failed to deploy. Not good advertising in my book. To be fair....How many teeth does the driver still have?
Hyundai had the unfortunate chance to see how its brand new rear-wheel-drive Genesis Coupe performs in a real-world crash when a 2.0 Turbo slammed into the concrete surrounding of a metal pole somewhere in Korea. Despite the severity of the crash and as you can see in the photos that have been circulating around the Korean blogosphere the past few days, it appears that in this particular car, both the driver and front passenger airbags failed to deploy. To be completely fair, the Coupe's front-body structure looks like it did its job by absorbing most of the energy caused from the impact, which is a good thing in the event of an accident. We're not aware of the details surrounding the crash so if any of you happen to know Korean and you've read something about it in the news, feel free to enlighten us with a comment.

looks like it held up really good structurally... the airbags not deploying is kinda of scary though.

Indeed the cabin looks solid but look at the bend in the steering wheel. The driver was hauling some ass and I think their face is crushed.

funny that hyundai still use 1st generation airbag system for the cars in korea but they put 3rd generation airbag system for the export cars (like hyundai in europe and usa.)
1st generation airbag's quality is literally terrible. I also got into an accident in korea 2 years ago in my mom's 2006 santafe. It was a pretty big crash, but the airbag didn't blowed. They said it's because the crash occured from the side... WTF, then how come the side airbag didn't popped? ppl keep saying (maybe not you guys) that the hyundai is actually getting better quality for their products, but I completely disagreed. Hyundai (and KIA) is a biggest piece of shit. I will not buy their cars until end of my life. BTW, I'm korean.

Edited for you... I am in the same boat as you, I would not wish a Korean vehicle on my worst enemy.

Probably wasn't a strong enough impact to deploy the bags. You don't just want the airbag going off each time you bump into a car do you?

If this was a production model, there's no reason for the airbag not to deploy, but according to the Jalopnik post,
"the car was wearing a temporary plate... Since we don't really know the circumstances of the crash, we're not willing to rule out this being not a temp plate, but a manufacturers plate, meaning the car could have been a non-salable tester. Which is why we're willing to overlook for the moment a lack of airbag deployment."

I found this video on Hyundai's explanation to this accident. Basically what they are saying is that Genesis Coupe's front airbags are designed to deploy only in a head-on collision (the range is 30 degrees to the right and left). So in this accident, the impact was out of the range so the airbag did not deploy in order to prevent the driver from getting injured from the airbag. This is BS!! FYI, as someone mentioned earlier, they use shitty ass airbags on domestic models (in Korea) and use the newest models on export models. Last edited by lyjw88; 11-18-2008 at 06:45 PM.. |
