Used car prices are INSANE
So my daughter's car was stolen on Wednesday from our driveway.
Broad daylight, wife, daughter and dog at home and oblivious.... But that's another story SO I'm looking for a replacement, cars selling for $15k with 170K miles.... rebuilt titled 6 year old hondas and toyotas at $17k it's INSANE. was hoping to be around 15K for something she'll get through 2 more years of college then grad school, don't think that's going to happen here's the kid jumping in the A4 for it's last trip out of our driveway |

I agree. It is the worst time to buy a used or even a new car. I've been looking for a CPO Mazda CX-5 for my mom. A 2-3 year old one with 30k is $2,000-$3,000 less than a brand spanking new one. It's a joke. The chip shortage is driving the used car prices through the roof.

A dealer in Phoenix listed the new Civic Si for 48k and I’m betting someone’s stupid enough to pay that price too. Everything new here has at least a 3k markup and used cars are going for several thousand more than when they were new even with 30-50k miles on them. F@#cking insanity the times we live in.

New car prices are just as bad. I've been looking at the Kia Telluride, but most places don't have any in stock. One dealer who has some wants $10k over MSRP.
Another dealer emailed me to say the best way to get the Telluride is to order it. Plan on a 6 month wait for the bottom trim level and 9 months for the top trim. |

Just ordered a new Ford Transit 250 LWB mid high roof. Dealer said no deposit needed because they'd have no problem selling it if I didn't take it. Expected delivery... maybe May, probably June.
Edit. New 2021 Transit dealer price is $50,369. Two used Transit vans on Autotrader within 500km. One is a 2017 with 105k km for $44,485 and the other is a 2020 with 109k km for $54,900!

Challenge whatever the insurance company pays you for the theft claim if not in line with equivalent replacement cost.

It is all very real right now. I tell most of my customers looking for a 2-year-old BMW to just buy a new one—it's cheaper! I've even saved some friends/customers thousands when I had a BMW retired loaner available, but that's harder today with nothing with which to replace a retired loaner. But then our dealer group does not allow selling over MSRP. It's just a thing they do. I'm sure you can find others who operate with that same ethic.
But, more importantly, be sure your insurance company is paying your loss based on the most current values. We lost my wife's 128i in an accident and managed to get the insurance to pay almost $4,000 over their original offer by using their own facts against them. We ended up getting more for the 128i than we paid for it over four-years ago. Of course we never found a replacement and she had to settle for a one-owner E90 with fewer miles. And the curiosity in me wants to know if your daughter had left the key in her unlocked Audi? Or what happened to be able to gain access and drive away? |

I noticed you are in Central CT. I used to work in East Lyme, and someone from their PD told me they were having a ton of cars stolen by kids in the area. Most of them were unlocked with the keys in them. Meanwhile I live in the middle of the woods and lock my vehicles in my driveway out of habit.

cop that did the report came about 9pm, his shift shift started at 3... all he did was car break ins and stolen cars for 6 hours. The video is pretty clear, and the 2 in my driveway had been spotted at numerous calls on wednesday by other cameras. Doors were unlocked, BUT we had what we thought was the only key in the house with us. We have our suspicions, and thinking poor audi design and our own ignorance made it easy for them |

That freaking kid is bold. Walking up in broad daylight to someone’s home to steal something. He most certainly isn’t scared to die. He must’ve been jacked on drugs or something to do something that brazen, reckless and dangerous.

The PD I spoke with about it said that due to the incident a few years ago where a minor died being chased by the police in a stolen car, many departments are encouraged to not pursue what they believe to be minors in stolen vehicles. The criminals know this. The guy I spoke with said he arrested some of these thieves, and their method was to have a car that dropped off several kids in certain neighborhoods to find and steal cars. The cops asked the kids what they do if they don't find one, and the kid responded that they always find them, many unlocked with the keys in them right in the driveway.

Meanwhile one of my friends lives in a not-so-great section of Hartford and leaves her car unlocked on the street. I guess it's all what someone is used to. Personally I trust people about as far as I can throw them, which with my thinner build and the obesity problem in this country isn't too far.

Back in the early 90’s car theft was huge, busted out ignitions etc then manufactures came out with anti theft ignitions/keys.
I didn’t know car theft was even a thing anymore. I’m guessing with new and used car prices so high, there’s a large market for parts or complete cars oversees |
