When I used to play I had a Tippmann 98 Custom with a few upgrades and the gun was a beast.

Paintball guns have come a long way since I used my Tippmann 98 custom (heavily decked out) and my autococker. You'll probably want one of the new electric guns for around 300 bucks as an entry gun. The Tippmann with like 300 bucks in mods will do about 12-13 balls a second... which a lot of guns out of the box can do now for about 1/2 the price. That being said the tippmann is damn near indestructible much like an AK47 lol. I'm partial to autocockers but you'll get a different opinion from everyone.

What you want to do with it, play in the woods with your friends being a weekend warrior or what is seen on tv which is the Speed ball games, totally two different activities thus different guns,

The one above is a speed ball gun and most likely will not serve you well in the woods. From what I seen and from my sons own activities you can not go wrong with a tippman. You can find these used all over the place they are easy to fix and maintain and there are lots of after market add ons. Depending on what you like to do you can be into these guns for over grand.

If you play in the woods check with the place you might go, some have restrictions on the type of mods you can have on a gun, like electric triggers some will not allow them since it turns the gun into full auto. Air Tanks are more popular then CO2, many places offer free refills on air not CO2 or Nitrogen these days how ever Air tanks cost more then C02.

How much are you looking to spend? www.pbnation.com, lots of info and what not there.

+1 on the Tippmann model 98 or A5, those are pretty much bulletproof markers to start with. Or you could look into one of the million Kingman Spyder variations as those are pretty popular too.

For a good starter electro, check out the Smart Parts Ion.

Skip the CO2 and go straight to compressed air, tanks now a days are pretty cheap and the consistency is worth it.

If you don't have it already, spend some money on a good mask first. Gun will do you no good if you can't see because the mask doesn't fit right / keeps fogging / etc.

I've played for 10+ years and have been on 4 different teams including one pro team (MidKnights, Nemesis, Strikeforce, Strange). I have had over 20+ guns. Paintball has evolved over the years and you have to ask yourself what you're going to be doing (woods, speed ball, hyper ball, etc). If you're just going to play for the weekends and not get so serious about it, I would not spend more than $300 on a marker, but make sure to stick with an electro pneumatic marker. If you have any questions don't hesitate to PM me.

I had a Smart Parts Ion.
That was the biggest POS i ever bought. balls would roll down the barrel and then when you shoot they just blow up in the barrel when they hit the stationary ball. Also it would also plug up or something. Half the time i could never get hardly any pressure.

Maybe i just had a lemon..

Also had a tippman 98. you could throw that gun in the mud and it will still work. I never cleaned or oiled my o rings and it still worked as long as i had it.
Good for a backup gun when your electronic gun breaks down.

Thanks for the response guys
Im looking to spend around $300, im not going to use it everyday....not even every week lol. Woods & speedball during the summer, and speedball during winter since its indoors, so im going for a speedball marker, its lighter and easier to carry than tactical markers.
I heard that tippman is really good but to be honest, i dont like how they look haha.
I looked around and found Spyder electra which was mentioned above, its around my price range. It looks great, and read pretty good reviews on it, its electronic and its shots up to 25bps. Plus there is not alot of thing to do on it except for the barrel and hooper lol which is good, cuz i dont want to spend too much money on a paintball marker.

Do NOT buy a Spyder....you can get a million other guns for the same price, guns that are a million times better than a Spyder. Most guns now say they can shoot crazy BPS, don't listen to it. How fast it shoots has more to do with how fast the loader you buy can feed it paintballs.

Don't buy a Spyder, you'll end up wanting a new gun after a couple times playing. If the specs say you can put CO2 through the gun, it's not very good.

Honestly if you want to get a damn good market for your money. Go on craigslist and buy a used paintball gun. Although all a good portion of these people used 98 customs, they were good back in 2001 not 2010. My suggestion would be is to see if you can pick up a:
tippmann A-5 (my old marker)
Smart Parts
Bob Long
Buschmaster
All of these markers will shoot 25+fps and you can definitely use these for a long time without having to upgrade. If you like it enough, you can upgrade to AIR instead of C02. Get different barrels and jack shit up. Best of luck

x2 the longer the barrel, the more accurate. generally that is.

also if the barrel has riffling in it, that will make a huge difference too. only problem with that is, if you break a ball, they are harder to clean really good.

I dont want to buy a used paintball gun. All these brands are abit expensive, definitely not looking to pay $1k+ on Bob long markers lol.

I've had a couple friends buy those, they weren't too happy with them. I'm not sure though, never shot one...they ended up going back to a Matix (Proto/Dye). They're reliable, and great for speedball/airball, and really easy to take care of (internal bolt, ect...).

It depends what you really want to play. I played a little woods and airball when I started playing and eneded up getting into speedball/airball. There really isn't a perfect gun for both, no matter what anyone says. Eventually you'll get into one or the other, and by then you'll know what you want to buy...that's what most people do.

There's a limit to that though...and in speedball/airball longer isn't always better. 12 in. is what most people shoot, 14 is the max. I have no idea about woodsball, never got serious about it.

Research....and not on the internet, at the paintball field. And, especially in paintball, you get what you pay for. If you look on a paintball site selling new shit, and you see something way cheaper than others, there's a reason for it. The stock barrel for a decent gun will do fine when you're starting. Good brands when I played....Dye, Proto (same thing), Stiffi, and a few others I can't think of right now. Stock barrels are better and better now, they'll do just fine.

Paintball is expensive when you get into it, especially when you know what you're looking to buy.

+1

I still have an 05 Alias Intimidator in flawless condition. I have taken the thing to a ton of tournaments and countless practices. I bet I put over one million rounds through it and it shoots like new. They can be had for <$200 now if you look for em.

Not sure where you plan to play speed ball and woods ball, but I can tell you in my area none of the places will allow you to use an electric speed ball or even a Tippman Electric trigger in woods balls. Full auto or near full auto is not allowed so they ban the use of those types of guns. This seem to be practice these days, however, you can use a tippman in speed ball if you like and add an electric trigger and swap it in an out depending on the what you are playing.

You better check on the rules at your place since you do not want to go out and spend money on something and not be able use it the way you want.
