Driving gloves that aren't douchey?

Hey all. So I've really been enjoying my M-Performance V2 steering wheel. I keep a box of baby wipes in my car and wipe down my hands every time I drive. I also clean the wheel every week with a brush and some interior cleaner. So far so good.

However, I've run into an issue that's really got me considering driving gloves. My hands are starting to crack and feel really rough from all the wiping.

I know this question is just begging for a bunch of douchey remarks, but I'm seriously asking -- Are there any driving gloves that don't look so douchey?

You clean the wheel every week? That's a little excessive for leather. The cloth alcantara part probably doesn't care, but even a quality cleaner like Leatherique should only be used once a season or so. You can use the conditioner a little more often, but I'd hesitate to recommend more than once a month.

And if you're already doing all that cleaning, you can probably skip wiping down your hands.

I was talking to a very good interior car upholster/repairer and he was telling me about the brand name alcantara and the similar microfiber fabric and how it wears and I think your smart to use gloves at least sometimes.

I've been using Sonax Leather Foam on my wheel and seats and I like it a lot. It cleans and conditions in one step and leaves behind a light coat of bees wax (yea seriously) which gives the leather a slightly tacky yet smooth feeling. The waxy film slowly wears off and leaves the leather not shiny or slippery at all. Almost looks like brand new leather. It's a very unique product I feel.

Asher Golf used to make a pair of AA Cabretta-Leather driving gloves I repurposed as shooting gloves, but its nearly impossible to avoid the douche factor of putting gloves on to drive on the street. Maybe the new Mechanix "Covert" shooting gloves (since they're thin)?

I don't touch the leather part too often. I've conditioned it once so far, but only do a wipe down of the leather when I do my weekly clean. The alcantara part is the part that I use a brush on and really clean. I would love to skip the hand wiping part, but my hands get kind of sweaty and it really shows on the wheel after a while.

Wow what a great collection of cars she has. The gloves she wears seems like the default driving glove and goes really well with vintage cars. It will probably be the one I end up with if there are no options. But I was hoping for something less noticeable.

Meh. I'm probably the least OCD on the forum. Just ask Justin.AutoTalent . My car is rarely clean and I take my 80 lb dog with me in the car everywhere I go. My OEM steering wheel that was replaced was pretty beat up with 2 years of use and some moderate cleaning.

I would suggest cutting back on both the cleaning of the wheel and the regular use of baby wipes. The regular cleaning interval with a brush is likely detrimental to the longevity of the wheel and the baby wipes are drying out your hands. Just wash hands and dry regularly. Don’t use gloves..... If you do, don’t let people see you. Around here that could cause some people to go nuts on you or your car.

I will admit that getting the bird from someone wearing driving gloves would give me an extra amount of pleasure.

Maybe a running glove, with silver tips to keep the texting and driving option alive? Plus no one could miss them in this color!

If you ceramic coat them, you should be able to clean them once a week without any issues.

The alcantara is going to smooth out and matte down over time, you're just going to have to deal with it. As for driving gloves, I have to use them auto-xing. Because we run mainly in the summer my palms are sweaty. I drive with a simple pair of home depot work gloves that have a suede palms without and padding. $8 solution and if you don't like them, you have a new pair of work gloves.

i believe there is no pair of gloves that wont look douchey.. and i have feeling like you re over cleaning the steering wheel.. once a week ll be fine.. if i were you i d try to keep my hands clean before driving that ll be a better option..

Alcantara = fake/synthetic suede.

I treat all the leathers in my car like I do my nice leather shoes. When I got my M-Perf V2 wheel I put Allen Edmonds suede protector spray on the alcantara parts. It's been seven months since I installed it and it's just started to look slightly matted down where I usually grip. I took my suede brush to it and it revitalized the fibers back up easily. I would not recommend using any product with wax in it.

As for driving gloves, look at Dents. Comfortable, super supple, and classy.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will look into those cleaning products. I suspect that I have a slightly more sweaty hand than you do. If I cleaned every 7 months, my wheel would not be able to resurrected.

I'm starting to think that I should just avoid the gloves all together and just get a new wheel every two or three years.
