Rolex Sport SS Demand
Recently visited the local Rolex AD (south coast plaza) and looked like the place got robbed. Almost no inventory and found out first person how crazy this sport stainless steel Rolex bubble is. It's sad gone are the days where you can go in and try on a SS sport model and buy it in person.
Btw my modest collection:

I heard yesterday from my AD that Rolex is trying to kill off the resellers and gray market with their ridiculous prices. Not entirely sure how holding off on inventory makes that strategy work or how long Rolex can survive with that strategy.

they are probably one of the only brands that is so recognizable and synonymous with luxury.

in the past, 1st half of the year you could find them everywhere and the 2nd half would start to get sparse. now its just a steady flow of sparse.

I find these Rolex’s to be nothing special.. I see soo many similar or fakes around. Kind of like the female LV handbags, everyone has one

I also heard Rolex wants to clear inventory of the larger 41mm Datejust. That model for whatever reason didn’t sell well. I think it’s discontinued. I personally thought it was too blingy/flashy for that style of Watch. 36mm is the sweet spot in my opinion for a Datejust. I truly love mine, and it gets more wrist time than my Submariner. Who knows what the real truth is. Rolex SS sport models are demanding crazy prices. BTW OP, great modest collection. I’m looking to add either the new white dial 39mm Oyster Perputual, 36mm Blue dial Oyster Perpetual with 3, 6, 9 on the dial, or 39mm black dial Explorer. My SS Submariner and 36mm White dial Roman numeral Datejust will have a roommate soon. I’m not a fan of watches bigger than 40mm on my 7.5 inch wrist.

Nice collection though. That’s a major reason my 36mm white dial Datejust gets more wrist time. It’s understated, simple, and a classic. I think the 36mm Datejust is great. Especially now that you could walk into a AD and have many different options/colors.

You talking about the shop outside of the mall? Or the one inside the mall? Both have zero inventory. Heck the Rolex store has shit for inventory too. The one inside was bare as can be when I picked up my Heuer black carrera phantom the other day. The one inside worked with me and gave me a nice discount. The broker like store outside wasnt interested in getting me this watch. But they sure did pitch me on all the customization I could make to my DSSD. But that's not for me. I did that shit with swatch watches in the 80's.

Hey Bigworm,
Didn’t even know about the store outside? Could you let me know about it, as I was referring to the store inside the mall.

lets say their target is 1mill watches/year.
before, theyd sell 700k jan-july, and 300k july-december. Earlier in the year, theyd sit for a little bit in stores and later in the year, you couldnt find them anywhere. now, they limit it to sell under 100k/month, to get to 1mill for the year. you cant find them as often throughout the year, but since it appears to be a shortage, people are jumping on them as soon as they come in the store. This gives them the illusion of being rare, while still selling the same amount of watches. And the rarer the watch, the more people will pay for it. It is why they also hiked up the MSRP at the same time they "limited" supply and they still sell before they even hit the shelves.

At the bottom of the ladder; you have something like a Tag Heuer (an amazing watch that I also own) that is an awesome value and price. It is my favorite daily watch. In the middle, you have watches that I like to call halfway watches i.e. Omega, Breitling... these watches are good but to me no better than a Tag for a fraction of the price and not even close to something as instantly classic like a Rolex. I am not sure who these watches are really marketed at; someone that doesn't want something like a TAG but cant afford a ROLEX? Above that you have Rolex which in my mind stands in a class of its own... Panerai, IWC etc are much less recognizable in this class. Above that you have AP, Patek... this where you have to be insanely wealthy to own these watches and simply are out of reach for most... So point being, what alternative to a Rolex does one have where the watch is a similar class, known brand, high quality and classic look...? add to that very solid resale; I can't think of any. |

Exactly depends if you base on innovation, reliability, heritage, mass appeal, and so on. Different brands appeal to different people. For holding value Rolex and patek are pretty high on the list. They don't really appeal to me for the reason that it's what any noob to watches assosicates with a nice watch. People know what it is and recognize it. I bought a sea dweller and never really cared for it. Now have a lot of other things and really love them.
