120 over 80 = hypertension now

Has your health care provider informed you of this new information?

Does anyone have thoughts about the change in classification of hypertension vs. "normal"?

Is the change sound care, with the good of humanity in mind? Or is it a money grab by the health care industry to increase the size of the addressable market?

Well if thats the case I'm already dead. My wife who is MUCH fitter than me would even be on the edge. Are you sure is wasn't pre-hypertension?

They've been hedging back for a few years now. Used to be anything under 140/90 was acceptable without meds. Then they lowered both numbers so that anything over 140 or 80 was bad. Used to be 120/70 was ideal, but now 120/80 is bad?

My doc says don't worry unless I'm regularly seeing numbers above 140 or 80. Either one by itself is a cause to review my current prescription. So far, I've been in the 120/70's range, so no cause for alarm.

Now if they could just decide whether coffee is good or bad...

They are constantly revising numbers. Remember they "practice" medecine. My Dr and I had a long talk about this not to long ago. They can't even agree in cholesterol levels much anymore.

Below is what I run in the Off-Season at my heaviest bodyweight. 2 weeks ago we had our health fair at work. Since I was leaning up for vacation and doing more cardio, my BP was 104/50 and pulse was 51. The nurse even asked me if I ever felt dizzy getting up too quickly. I told her no....that I had just finished my 2nd coffee and had made my rounds at work. Plus I had been to the gym already that morning.

The lower, the better. Problem is docs many times want an older persons bp to be higher so they don't pass out. Mine was in that mode. I asked for another doc who realizes I am not your "Average" geezer. I am 73 and very fit. I weigh 140. I take 25 mg of HydroChlorOthiaz and 10 mg of lisinopril.

I take the HYd. in the morning and the Lisinopril after super. In the morning is averages (both arms) around 110/68. When I go to the gym after my time on the treadmill is is around 100/60. My daughter is a Nurse practitioner and she said to not worry about low unless you get dizzy or feel faint in the slightest.

I also do Astorvastatin (20 mg) Brought my total Cholesterol down to 166 and High Density up to 74. Prior to that my cholesterol was 60.

Getting old sucks but I'm making the best of it.

BTW I think Omron bakes the best monitor. Probably the BMW's of monitors.

i think this is a bit misleading; kind of like pre-diabetes.

Hypertension is clinically diagnosed at 130 I believe and thats stage one hypertension.

goal BP with Diagnosed HTN is still <140/90.

it you dont have hypertension than your goal should be as low as possible.

lots of pressure in healthcare for evidence-based medicine...obvs the lower the better

So yesterday we were back in town picking up some supplies, and I notice they had this new style of blood pressure machine.

My wife's has been borderline, so I've had her taking beet root powder as it's a powerful Vasodilator.l for the last 45 days or so. Hers came back at 117/84. So it's working.

So I sit down and get in, and I get 98/49. Now as I've been dieting for vacation..my BP was 104/50 before we left.

Don't know how accurate it was as I read on the machine that it was for people with arm size ranging from 13" - 17". I know it was a struggle to get my upper arm into the cuff....so that could have skewed the results.

I had a kidney stone last year and my blood pressure went through the roof. Omron was recommended to me and hats what I have. When the dr asks about my BP, I can show/email him my periodic log.

120 over 80 and 72 beats per second is nominal. Less pressure is not necesarily good. You need nominal pressure for your brain to work optimally.

Not everything is a conspiracy to make money.

Different health societies have different standards for how they classify health conditions. They utilize "evidence-based medicine" to see the long-term health complications and overall prognosis of patients before making recommendations.

Thanks Germanauto. What is your view of the messaging that 120 over 80 is now considered hypertension?

^ there are stages to hypertension

SBP >120 prehypertension, I believe the new nomenclature is elevated BP
SBP >130 stage I
SBP> 140 stage II

stages help determine how many different classes of meds you should start on and other things.

BP goals vary with co morbid conditions.

I think people should just try to exercise and eat right, take ur meds if prescribed. thats all you can do.

Fixating on the number will likely cause stress and increase your BP

My last checkup I was 98/58. I just read for hypotension that I should increase my salt intake... My wife will love that
