E39 Power potential

I am looking to purchase a 540i to go with my E92 335i.
I am interested in what kind of power can be squeezed out of the 540i without FI.
Also any things to look for or avoid when looking for one?

If a powerful yet stock E39 is what you seek, get one of these:
1. M5
2. 540i M-sport
5. 540i 5-speed

I have read that the E60 M5 has some reliability issues. The 540i has the rock solid 4.4 in it. I was just wondering if there was much power gains to be had with that platform.
I don't believe being an M-Sport does anything power wise, correct?
