anyone work overnight hours ?
I'm going to start going into wrk from around 2:00am to 7 or 8 in the morning five days a week. Hours that I think I prefer. and I'll at least avoid one rush-hour and my drive home in the morning is the less congested direction.
Anyone work weird hours ? And I'm curious if you/they prefer overnight. |

I did two stints on the night shift, one right out of HS & one as my last job for an employer.
The first job I was living at my mom's house, and could sleep in a nice dark, quiet basement. The second job I was in Brklyn, & the noise could often be bad for daytime sleeping. At the second job I enjoyed not having the big wigs around to watch so much at night. It made a difference. But I did like living at night. Besides avoiding traffic & crowds, the night is also very beautiful & stimulating. I think the hardest part is maintaining a social & family life with all those who work normal hours. On weekends you will probably want to be on a normal schedule, & will have to switch back to a night schedule on Sunday or Monday. This can try your discipline! Hi Caravaggio
I'm LemansE90335xi's other half. Not part of the forum, but I do work overnights and he suggested I reply. Absolutely, the best part of overnights is the commute - no traffic, or driving against the traffic is a dream. The biggest negative I find is that I'm always tired/struggling to sleep, as I flip between being awake at night during the work week and awake during the day on weekends. If your lifestyle is such that you can sleep at a consistent time all week long, I'd recommend doing that. From a job perspective, I prefer working overnights. It's a small crew, my anti-social self can work alone as much as I want, and I don't have to deal with the public anymore. From a personal life perspective, I mostly hate it, because I'm offset from my other half, which makes it challenging for us to do things together. So yeah, it's kind of a mixed bag. But it's certainly doable. Hope it works out well for you. Good luck!

I have not worked over night (night, or midnight shift) but know many people who have and do. Among the people I know, night/midnight shift is preferable to afternoon/swing shift.

I did for my first real employer out of college. They provide a 10% night shift differential which was still peanuts but it was better than nothing. My shift was 11PM till 7 to 8AM. At first it was fine. But eventually, the change in when I could sleep caught up to me. I was tired constantly. Couldn't really sleep during the day. I was in my early to mid 20s at the time. So I wanted to be socially active with my friends that were doing things at opposite times that I would be needing to get some sleep. I eventually moved out of doing night shift and was happier for it.

Back in the day I would work 7 PM to 7 AM. Loved it. I was there all by myself. No one breathing down my neck. Course that was after working my day job as well

My brother does it. weekend night shifts at the hospital since the hourly rate is higher. 12 shifts a month. Its nice because its quiet, nobody else is around, and you don't have to discharge patients. Don't have to deal with social aspects of patient care either. $160/hr is nice too lol.
downside -- social life takes a hit. probably hard to do if you're in a relationship with someone or have kids. and if you want a normal life when you're off you need to spend like 2 days fixing your sleep schedule back to normal which probably isn't good for your health.

Used to work 2PM-Midnight with alternating 2 and 4 day weekends. So I'd work Mon-Thursday one week, have FRI and SAT off, then work SUN-WED the next week and have THU-SUN off. I liked the 4-day weekends every other week and I liked sleeping in late and having lunch with Wifey before heading off to work. But it was an hour commute, so I'd get home at 1AM and it was often hard to go right to bed. So there was good and bad in the schedule.

I worked 4pm to 1pm for about a year. I actually kinda liked it. I could run errands in the late morning and never hit traffic. Lots of perks to it but ultimately I missed seeing my wife, friends, family and my newborn baby girl. I'd come home at about 2am and just sit in her room so I could see her but let her sleep. It broke my heart and I dearly missed just normal conversations with my wife.

I do my 10 hours at work, go home, put kids to bed and work another 3 for good measure.
Go corporate they say, it is fun and lots of money they say...

When I was in the Army, I worked a few different rotating shift schedules. The worst was what we called 6 and 2. We worked six day shifts then two days off, six swing shifts and two days off, six night shifts and two days off, then repeat endlessly 365 days a year. Your body never knows what day it is and your sleep patterns are a mess. Any steady shift is much better and I've worked the night shift as a steady shift and liked that.

For a time around late 2018-early 2020 I was doing rideshare at nights in SoFlo driving 9pm-6/7 AM. Traffic is terrible during the daytime in Dade/Broward counties but not so much in Palm Beach. At night, you obviously move around quicker. However, rideshare isn’t really work as for me it was getting paid for something I love doing: driving. Bring your own boss and listening to whatever tunes you wanted was the best. However, every now and then there would be some bad passengers but it was far less common.
