I briefly looked at it - its not a bad deal and looks ok - I personally wouldn't touch a Chrysler product for a few years until they fully stabilize.
Also, I am not sure what the reliability is on that Italian built diesel. |

I think the Grand Cherokee is one of the best looking midsize SUVs out there. The SRT model must be fun to drive. Not sure how it compares against driving the X5. I do think the X5 is one solid feeling SUV and not tinny feeling. That's one of the biggest attractions to me about the X5. Did drive the RRS recently and the X5 (IMO) feels more solid and fun to drive. More snob appeal with RRS which is OK if you're into that. The X5 has a bigger model lineup so it is more common than the RRS. Jeep and Rover aren't the most reliable brands.

Don't go there!
I owned a Grand Jeep Cherokee. With the exception of off-road ability you cannot compare the build quality, reliability, fuel consumption, servicing and maintenance and residuals to the BMW X5. Don't even think about it |

I also looked into the JGC Overland edition... They are great IMO but when you sit in one and start playing with the electronics it just seemed like the quality wasn't nearly up to par with the X5.
I thought the JGC drove pretty nice; but not comparable to the X5. Not even close. |

My friend has anew jgc and i borrowed it for a weekend roadtrip with my family. Kids liked the ride in the back and it drove really well. Then go drive an x5 a d the jeep doesnt seem so nice anymore. I wanted to be practical and save some money.
Jeep specked out around $52plus for anything comparable gadget wise Jeep seats are way less comfortable, infotainment is like 5yrs behind on jgc, mpg is less, and the pickup is really lackluster when you need it on highway. If you can afford the x5 dont think twice you will regret it. Imo |

I looked at them briefly as I thought (and still think) the 2014 model was a great looking SUV.
Sitting in the showroom was fine, the seats were well supportive, and interior felt and looked well put together...maybe not BMW/Mercedes level, but nice overall. That's where the positives ended. I test drove a Summit with the 5.7 Hemi (not the SRT8, as I can't justify spending that kind of money on a Chrysler product) and within the first 50 feet was severely disappointed by the lack of refinement and driving pleasure. The power was lacking, the shifts rough and delayed, overall it felt like I was driving lumber wagon. I would have been happy turning around at the first stoplight, it was that bad. They seem to be selling well, as I see the 2014s all over the place now, but the people who buy them are probably not looking at the X5, M-class, or Q7. In the end, I was really bummed as I really wanted to like it.

LOL ... are we really having this conversation? I wouldn't drive a Chrysler product if it was given to me for free.
Not only are these vehicles in 2 different segments, I can't see someone who wants what the X5 has to offer even consider the Jeep. |

I think the E70 is a beautiful vehicle and the F15 is a nice progression. I look forward to a new F15 in a few months. |

Agree, had 2 Grand Cherokee, 93 and 96, and my daughter had an 04. Not in the same universe with the X5, although does look pretty good!

I should probably be banned for thinking this but I seriously (just online lurking) looked at the 2014 Dodge Durango Citadel. Price is $20k less, 3rd row is real, and V8 power. It's a MB GL chassis. I know that doesn't mean much but reviews were saying it handled well.

Flame suit on - Test drove the new X5 3.5 (F15) and the '14 Jeep GC Summit V6 back to back yesterday evening. And I think the Jeep GC is a viable option depending on your priorities. Much better than in previous years.

I've driven a few jeeps, and everyone one of them was an absolutely terrible drive. I think the srt is sharp, but is not comparable to the x5 in any way. From everything ive read, the 50i is a touch faster too.

Re: the SRT8, it's no different than Camaros, Chargers, and mustangs.. you can get good, even great performance for a fraction of the cost of a BMW, but you will suffer in several other areas, you get what you pay for.
No one looking at a Jeep or Ford, etc should expect to find the same "fit and finish" or ride quality as a luxury brand. Anyone surprised they can't get the same quality for 30 - 40% less should take a high school economics class. None of this means you can't cross shop the GC as a lower cost alternative. It's a good looking SUV with a lot of features for the money. Being in the same class as an X5 is just not one of those features, nor should anyone expect it to be, nor was it ever intended to be. |

You've gotta be kidding, right? Jeep = Rental cars
Had one Jeep Grand Cherokee back in the early 2000's and that was enough. I only drive Jeeps when I get them from a rental dar company. |

OP, as a BMW fan and a former owner of a 2011 JGC Overland w/ the Hemi, I'll provide you with my point-of-view. The JGC is in the same class assuming your criteria is for a SUV/SAV with room for five passengers. Beyond that the vehicles are very different.
The key feature with a Jeep is the ability to travel off-road with a vastly better 4WD system vs. xDrive. This can be an advantage both on and off-road. However the offset is a a vehicle with a high-center of gravity and tires with tall sidewalls which negatively impacts dry weather handling and braking. Even with the Hemi the vehicle is slow. Though I believe the performance is better with the new 8-speed transmission. The materials and fit & finish, while good for a Jeep, are behind that of the E70 X5. In the (near) 2-years and 40k miles of ownership, I only had one problem. That was with a drivers side mirror which was replaced under warranty. Even the paint was free of any rock chips. Fuel economy was bad at 15 mpg. I was rear-ended at a stoplight by a driver in a F350SD with a 24' trailer (he was texting). Slight damage to the tailgate and that was it. I would give the edge to the X5 for on-road performance, materials, dealer service and comfort. Back then I was able to buy it for $39.5k USD. I sold it within 48 hrs for $33k. To me, this represented a great value. However the new Summits are ranging in the low to mid 50's. Take one for a test drive but I suspect you'll opt for the X5. The X5 is on my list for replacing my wife's current vehicle sometime next year. If you do opt for the Jeep, sign-up for 3-year membership with Tread-Lightly. The cost is $60. After one month you'll have access to Chrysler's AffiliateRewards program. You'll be able to buy the Jeep at 1% under invoice less any current rebates. |
