Any recommendations for brand, model, size? I have no idea if she will stick with it. If she does, she can get a better one in a year.

or,

Do I find a good used bass?

I've been playing guitar for 50+ years but I know nothing about bass.

I'll spend time on The Google today, but any help here is greatly appreciated.
I started a little less than two years ago with a Fender Jazz bass I bought off of a friend (got it for $500). My hands are quite small, so I transitioned to a short-scale. I got a Gretsch from GC for ~$300 and I love it! It's much easier for my small hands. I hope to get my fingers stretched enough to eventually get back to the Fender. Ibanez makes a pretty good short-scale for ~$200.

Fender Squier type Jazz bass. Great starter bass which will make the more top-o-the-line Jazz more appreciated.
I started with a Ibanez bass and Kramer guitar but always wanted the real deal.
My sons first guitar was a Strat Squier.
He and I both have American Standard guitars and basses now.

A few minutes ago I had an epiphane, (sp?). I told Mrs. Hubba that I needed to start going to my lessons with a couple drinks in me. I seem to play much better!
