Anyone else here a Google Guide?

I started off years ago from an invitation from Google after getting such positive feedback from my Reviews and Photos. Now I'm a Top Guide and in the Top 5% in my region. Fun past time. I like to share information, suggestions and recommendations.they email me with updates every month.

I think one of my google account has the local guide label, but that's about it. I don't tend to do much on google.

If you are into reviewing places and what not I would look into yelp. They actually put on great events for their "elite" reviewers and have offers for free meals and stuff all the time (varies by location obviously). I use to be really into it and would go to many of the events and actually found out about some great places because of them. They stopped doing in person events during covid and it was more like stop by a place and get free to go stuff, but I think they will be starting in person events again soon.

I used to be. Reviewed hundreds of restaurants. Got invited to a Google event online celebrating local guides. The local guides had 10,000 reviews+

What are they reviewing?
One I understood. She was a globe trotter.
The other guy seemed to review any and every service/store he used.

My 709 reviews suddenly felt like nothing.
Comparison is the thief of joy they say.

I'm in the top 5% as well. Traveling 38 states in 1 1/2 months helped get my reviews up quite a bit this year. My reviews are constructive criticism, I want to see places succeed and sometimes small changes can make a huge difference. One review got me a $700 check and one a 15% refund on a hotel room. I'm always fair and try to be as kind as possible. Hate seeing nasty reviews, that doesn't help anyone.

I highly recommend checking out Yelp if you enjoy rating restaurants and other things. They truly host fantastic events for their "elite" reviewers and frequently extend invitations to free meals and other goodies (varies by location obviously). When I was really into it, I would attend a lot of the events and because to them, I actually learned about some wonderful destinations. During COVID, they ceased holding in-person events in favour of stop-by-and-get-free-to-go offerings. However, I anticipate that in-person activities will soon resume.

Haha. Well Google isn't paying me. However, I've received many perks and freebies from happy and grateful business owners.

Another new notification received today...

I am a guide as well but not as prolific as all of you. I am merely top 10% in the DC region. I just try to review places I really like. It’s not like Google is paying me or anything, so I really only put so much effort into it. I just hope some people get value out of my reviews to help them shop, sightsee or pick a restaurant.

I think it's great when people who have good taste take the time to review quality products and restaurants/services. It certainly helps the proprietor and pushes competition to step their game up, benefitting everyone. I leave reviews usually when a restaurant grossly misses the mark, or when an individual goes out of their way I always remind the company know how great that employee is.
