I'll just say that what I think often gets lost in all the arguing is just how damned good we have it in America, and how this is really a blip in history where folks not at the top have a chance to become rich beyond their wildest dreams. Nobody, and no country has ever done it better than America in the past 100 years or so of human history. Not even close, and that's why everybody and their mothers want to come here (and not the other way around).

In my early 40s now and looking back on my life, especially my professional career, any reason as to why I'm not wealthy are all due to decisions I've made and failures I've committed. I've played things way too safe over the years, not taking a lot of big chances over the years and I've eeked by comfortably. Any door that has shut on on my life, whether professionally or personally, have almost completely been of my own doing. For years and years I've told myself I wanted my life to be a certain way, and amazingly it's pretty close to how I thought I'd wind up. Successful to a point yes, hopefully a good person yes, but ultimately I have to admit I have seriously underachieved due to my OWN choices. I've been blessed with great health, a great immediate family, and what I'd like to think is a decent intellect. I've been given more out of the gate than 99% of people on this planet, and there's no way I've even come close to doing right by that. I have squandered quite a bit.

In short, what I'm saying is I can understand the reasons why I haven't made a better life for myself thus far, both personally and financially and almost ALL of it's on me. This is why I don't hate or despise people who have more than I do, or are happier with their families etc. They no doubt made better decisions than I did along the way, and did things I should have done, and quite frankly KNEW I should have been doing all along.

More people need to be honest about themselves, and what they did/didn't do in their lives that have led them to where they are now. Whining, crying, and blaming other people for all your problems is never going to work. People who do that don't want to be better people, they want everyone to be just as miserable as they are.

So... if every single person worked hard, everyone would be successful? This is like everyone opining they are “above average”.

Resources are finite. So is wealth.

I was taught as a child that asking for a handout was a bad thing. I was taught to work for what I want. I was taught self-reliance was a good thing. I was taught as a child to accept responsibility for my actions and to learn from my mistakes.

I can't say I have everything I want, but that philosophy has served me well.

up until that point in their lives most people do not have anything they worked hard for except their grades. it is the most relatable way to convey the point. it is the same ideology applied to a different currency. once it is put into perspective and they can relate their opinion changes.

It used to be that the goal of government was to help people get themselves out of poverty. Now the role of government is to make people more comfortable in poverty. Making it easier to live in poverty just perpetuates it. I'm fed up with those in poverty claiming as a right those things that should be earned. Having children that you can't afford to provide for is not a right, it is flat out irresponsibility. I am held accountable for my actions and decisions. Why should the poor get a free pass on such accountability. That said, I am fine with government and taxpayers helping those who through no fault of their own are unable to care for all of their needs through their own efforts. I do not support assisting those that refuse to take any responsibility for themselves whatsoever.

That's oversimplifying the topic.
Socialism isn't all about taking money from the top and redistributing to the bottom.
In fact, money loses significance. Everybody works for the good of the country. At least that's the theory. It would be equivalent to getting rid of GPAs and the entire class working as a team in an exam.
The problem is, without money/GPA, there is no incentive to work harder in that team. Human nature to let the next guy do the work.

"Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."
