Agreed, I don't know what people are complaining about.

Porsche somehow offers variant after variant of their cars and yet half the people on here are closet Porsche-files and desperately saving their banana peels to one day be able to afford a Porsche POS, one ramen noodle dinner at a time!

So good for BMW for hopping on board! How can BMW give us a CF roof for $65k when Porsche requires a GT3 RS + weistac package to have that?

I tell you, every time I see an X5 M I wonder why BMW doesn't offer CCB brakes for it... we'd be able to read long threads about how the CCB brakes are unlike anything else in the world and completely necessary for picking the kids up from school

" ... To give you an idea, one could definitely see something like the BMW M4 having a CSL in the near future, as the m4 is a coupe after all. There could be more here. What is also interesting that BMW has trademarked the M8 CSL along with M2 CSL and the M4 CSL...."

Yeah but non S versions of those cars aren't really for the track and line up with the Audi S line or BMW M235i

This is a simple matter of a 'choice architecture' to enhance overall sales as well as enhance revenues.

What's the best way to sell a M to more buyers? Put it next to a M CSL.

Plus, there are always consumers willing to spend top dollar...no matter what. So keep going upmarket with models, not down. Eventually some price elasticity will be reached, but clearly BMW believes there is headroom.

Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, and all that kind of product design. The list is endless.

this chart shows the relative levels of "civic-ness" of the cars? That's very useful that it goes from basic Civic to Civic Time Attack.

Keep in mind they're also trying to do product differentiation here.

Prior to current gen, M Sport and M Performance were the same, and ZCP was simply an add on to M cars. They haven't done anything here other than to rebadge M Sport from M Performance and Competition package from M cars.

The real story here is that CS and CSL have been added as new trim levels to M cars.

The CSL is a 3er so let's keep it purist.
The 3er wasn't even a twinkle in BMW's eye when the first CSL came out. So I really don't think it matters .

All I want to know is BMW's entire future product architecture so that I can make sure when I buy, wait no, rent my latest new BMW that a new car won't come out before the end of the rental term that will have all my friends pointing at my car and going "dawg, y'ain't tha shit no more".

I'm just not sure I can handle that. Whatever I buy, I want it to remain The Greatest!

Because it is a sedan? I can understand that perspective...but it's not like the history of CSL is that long and well established. BMW hasn't made one since the E46, so I think they could (theoretically at least) take the trim level to whatever direction they want.

I wonder what the "take rate" is for the F80 CS vs. the F82 CS? Could be a decent data point in terms of the likelihood of the CSL in the G80 or G82 (or both).

M2 CSL on the other hand...now that would be something to get excited about, just because of the smaller size.

My thinking is that if the CSL follows in the footsteps of the M3GTS and M4GTS as primarily track focused cars as stated in the OP, having a roll cage and no rear seats in a 4-door sedan kind of defeats the purpose.

For me, the ultimate ///M would be in the veins of the E46 M3CSL or E90 M3 CRT, track beasts that retain (almost) full daily practicality. Right now, the M4cs is what comes the closest to that for me. IMO, the M3cs is slightly more biased towards comfort while the M4cs is slightly more biased towards perfromance (more weight savings).
