335i or 335d
It's a tough choice as it is, but which one is more reliable? Cause I'm planning to get a bimmer in a couple months, and it's a tough choice, I could get a coupe 335i, slightly better performance, or the 335d, sedan model only available, better mpg. And how's the reliability in these things?
I really don't wanna buy a 328i or a lexus >_> |

I have had all of them. 335i coupe, sedan, and Msport diesel.
I currently have both the 335i and 335d sedan. If I had to keep one, it would definitely be the 335d. Totally different driving experience. All the owners, and magazine testers swear by them. At least 2 major publications (Motor Trend, Washington Post), said one of the "best cars ever".

There's plenty of things to debate between these two cars, but your question is about reliability, and in that area there is no debate. There have been no widespread problems reported with the 335d so far. The only thing that comes close is a few problems here and there with the Urea running out too quickly, but it's hard to say if that's not just dealers filling the tank up incorrectly.
The 335i, on the other hand, well we've all heard the countless horror stories. So if reliability is one of your principal concerns, the 335d should be your weapon of choice. |

Well shiiiit! I like 335d but no coupe option in the states :[ oh well the gas mileage is totally worth it! Btw, the gas mileage in the 335i is always disputed, does anyone know a real answer to the 335i mpg? Cause motortrend got 20-30, bmw says 22-26, and others say like 27-24. Even then, thats still real good mpg/horsepower ratio.

depends on how heavy footed you are. If I drive aggressively, I think the car drinks gas. If I drive relaxed, its a match for my RAV4. Only problem is granny driving is hard to do in this car especially a tuned one.

At first I was ashamed of the sound, and tried to keep it subdued. Now I am actually proud of it, and wish more people would notice it. Especially when I leaving them in my dust. With the JBD, I have clocked high 12's, and consistant 4.5 sec 0-60mph times.
FYI: The worst mpg I got on one tank in the 335d was 16.9mpg. The worst mpg I got on one tank in the 335i was 12.2mph The best HWY MPG on the 335d was 43.5mpg The best HWY MPG on the 335i was 31mpg

No manual option for the d makes it an obvious choice to me. But if they were both offered only in automatic I still prefer the i. I have a 335xi an x5d. I love the d engine. It's fantastic! But it doesn't suit the 3er like the other engine does. That n55 and n54 are silky smooth. The d is rough sounding and laggy from a start. Suits the truck nicely though.

If you only use the car on the road I will take 335d especially in SF with hills. If you need a car for the track as well buy the 335.

Oh really? Sure about that? the i is the way to go for a 335i, but an X5d is the way to go for truck IMO. If the hills or anything else bothers you throw a tune on the 335i it more than you need. Power deficit really? You funny.

The lack of a manual transmission option kept me from the 335d. And while the N54 is a great engine, if I could do it all over again I would get the diesel.

Don't get me wrong, my 335i does 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, it is quick! But in everyday driving without any effort at all, the 335d still surprises me. Compared to a stock 335i, its no comparison, the 335d is so much more impressive in low end torque, it makes up for the more mellow top end.

If they threw the 35d into the X3, I'd ditch the RAV4 put the money towards the X3. For now looks like I'll get an X5 35d at some point.

Did is say power deficit anywhere in my post? No. I'm complaining about how our cars run out of steam at 6000 RPM... well short of redline. A tune will not fix this. In fact, it exacerbates the problem. You get an even bigger surge up to 5500 or so RPM, then the car once again dies off hard as boost is cut substantially relative to peak.
