Would you rather ______ or ______?
Let's play a game.
Hypothetical or real life scenarios welcome. Add why's to your answer. I'll start. Would you rather make $100k annually and have no respect whatsoever from your peers (i.e. people avoid conversation with you because they already know you have nothing worth hearing) or make half that amount and be respected and relied on from your peers? |

tough call. the difference between making 50 and 100k a year is pretty large. its not like going from 200 to 250. i'd go with option #1. I could care less about my peers at work. most of the time i try to avoid conversation at the workplace anyway because it sometimes leads to more work on my plate or its just pointless gossip that i don't care about and wastes time. rather waste time on the forums/reddit/instagram

I think I'll take the $50K and fleece the peers that rely on me for the other $50K...
Would you rather have a nice house, a few supercars, lots of money, but no chance of ever having a happy relationship / good kids (and lets say you can't pay for sex here, so let's assume it is once a month) Or, live in a very modest house, Toyota Camry, borderline getting by on finances on combined income and any unexpected issue could cause financial distress, BUT you have an amazing wife, great kids and are happy from that perspective? |

What would I rather? Get ''some'' respect, there are ways and means it's not that difficult, for instance earning more would mean maybe you have more power, to then set achievement targets and 'change' the way of thinking making it a fun place to work and take down the blinds in your office so people can see you

First of all, it really depends on where you live. Fifty grand isn't going to give you shit if you live anywhere on the West Coast or NE. $100k barely does. I'd have to go with Option 1 even if I don't currently live on the coast. Even in ATL I wouldn't be able to live comfortably on such a small amount to live off of.

As I have gotten older, i have found out that unless you want to play into the office politics, join the professionally society cliques, and kiss %#@ to the higher ups, it doesn't matter. Get in, Make your money, Get out, move to the next level somewhere else. |

Honestly it's just hard for me to imagine this scenario, lol. If I actually knew that my subordinates didn't respect me I would seriously look in the mirror and try to understand why. If they didn't respect me and it felt as though because of the amount of money I was making, I'd probably try to right the ship somehow. Perhaps show that I'm a charitable or caring person. You see, your question is very basic but didn't necessarily carve out rules so my feeling is I can work my way around the alleged issue so that I wouldn't be a "permanent" prick that no one respected. Ultimately, my original answer still stands I think. |

I will always take the money, unless my lack of knowledge puts the job itself at risk. Makes no sense to be in a job that you're not qualified to be in, because you will lose it sooner than later. I assume respect = job security, so that's not a concern for the $50K job.

Ill take the $100k, as mentioned theres a big difference in leaving on 50k vs 100k.
I am always told I am too nice so maybe I need a little less respect so I can be more of a hard azz. Would you rather: Marry a Kardashian (Not Kaitlyn) -or- one night stand with Jennifer Aniston |

50k and the respect/admiration of peers. Respect from my peers has enabled me to climb the ladder, move on to better positions, and generally have a better quality of life than making 100k would.
I actually start a new job in June, and what my peers had to say about my performance is what gave me the advantage in addition to my interviews. |
