Ed, did you see the hawk kill the coot? I didn't know that they did that. That looks like a juvenile red-tail to me, not a juvenile Cooper's, which is a bird killer/eater. Anyway, fine shot.

Didn't see it Dave, I'm guessing he chased a smaller bird off, or is eating leftovers.

Ed, super "Eagle Tree".

Are they fishing near there? If so, I'd stake that out.

Actually, around here I have only seen them prey upon the thousands of other birds, and in a time honored eagle tradition, they often let the smaller hawks to their dirty work and then steal the prey. It's hard to see in that shot, but that is two adults and three juveniles, plus a hawk looking up at them from another tree. That is as close as I could get as that tree is in an off limits area of the NWR.

Interesting. Around here, they almost exclusively prey on fish. One of my friends got a picture of one lugging a goose back up to it perch.

When an eagle flies over, most of the other birds bolt. For some reason, the common mergansers seem to ignore them. I suppose that they'll just dive underwater at the last second, if an eagle ever comes after them.

This time, a hawk tree! Actually I have gotten my best baldy shots at this tree as they often perch here, but this day, two red-tails were taking in the view. Shot with a wide angle straight up through my sunroof.

Buck, shot at ISO 12800, after sundown:

Big Buck After Sundown (ISO 12800) by David Stephens, on Flickr

I used DxO's PRIME noise reduction to control the noise. I left a little luminescence noise it to avoid smearing details and I upped Micro Contrast for the same reason.

^^^Very cool shot, DC. No pun intended.

I was out loading up the bird feeder today and heard a new bird call. I looked out into the trees and saw a pileated woodpecker off aways. Big sucker. But by the time I grabbed my camera and got back outside, he was gone. I hope to catch him again. Very distinctive call.

Good luck Mark, I would love to see that. I miss the woodpeckers in my yard ever since I had to have my silver maple cut down (dead and diseased, ready to fall on the house!).
