I sen him an email on my friends behalf about reviewing his RS6 (which he also hasn't yet reviewed) and it took weeks to get a response, understandably. Point is wait a bit, he'll respond eventually, especially with such a good car offered

The details he goes into about the car is quite impressive. He clearly spent a lot of time with the car and in research. The innovation (or at least my perception of that) in this car was so awesome and really is what seemed to set BMW apart from so many others at the time, even if the execution wasn't always there or reliability. The current cars, while very capable, just seem to lack the uniqueness of yesteryear relative to other brands.

It is a great transmission for what it is. The failures of SMG components were mainly due to heat exposure. I had ZERO issues with my SMG. Shifting at redline with the tranny in S6 mode was one of the most emotionally satisfying things about this car and it THROWS you in the seat with each click of the paddle. The manual transmission in these cars was essentially an E39 transmission. It had slower acceleration and a dramatically reduced top speed.

My E60 M5 was extremely reliable. I did the rod bearing change myself at45K miles. The only issues I ever had were the steering angle sensor and the ionic control module for cylinder bank 2 ($97 on eBay). Of course if you look online, there are people that are going to voice their issues, just as we have issues with our M3's. They are not that bad of a car.

One of my fondest memories was killing my buddy's Gallardo in a drag race. I was once doing 145 with four people in the car and came up over a mountain highway only to see 6 bikers doing 125. We flew past them and the head turns and looks we got through their helmets was hilarious.

Probably the coolest most ridiculously designed cars ever and I can't wait to own another.
Ha, I about choked when you said the smg was a great transmission. Hilarious! It was absolutely awful!

For what it was, it was a great tranmission. It was a racecar transmission in a family sedan. What did you expect?

It was not nearly as bad as the F1 transmissions in the Maserati Quattroporte or the Gransport. For cars during that time period with F1 transmissions it was definitely a good one.

Was the M5 meant to be driven in the city? No. Was the Gallardo or Aventador? No. When the M5 is on a track, it's outrageously fun and serves its purpose well. I drove it in the city all the time and yes, it wasn't fun, but I had to remind myself what it was at times.

Had an SMG e60 m5 and absolutely loved it. I miss the wail of the V10 with Eisenmann Race exhaust...it honestly sounded like an exotic.

Actually got in to a little race with a moded e60 M5 a few weeks back.
He couldn't escape me even at full throttle

Car did reek of fuel from his straight pipe though.

Its a good review and fair since half its "legend" is over maintenance. I like Doug. I do wish sometimes he would have just a straight "enthusiast" score. I love my E60 M5 even though it does have its issues.

I took an offramp. There was a massive downpour before I got there. I started to hydroplane. Let off the gas and countersteered but absolutely nothing happened. Hit a four inch deep patch of water. Car spun out of control and I crashed into the side of a hill five times. Hurt like hell, but I luckily didn't hit anyone. I've hydroplaned many times in the past but there was just too much water for me to change trajectory in this situation.

Oh how I wish BMW to return to the ethos of E9x M3 and E60 M5.

Meanwhile, in the current M forums, everyone is arguing about whether their cars acoustics fall within a range of horrendous to acceptable.

This is how a BMW M car should sound - absolutely glorious.

I experienced everything he talked about in that video. Replaced motor, replaced SMG, all kinds of other things that died on my old E60 M5. Yes these cars need tons of maintenance and repairs, even if you do everything right, but I'll tell you what, I'm going to buy another one, one of these days. It was the best BMW I've ever owned, and also the worst! Lol! I'll be getting an E39 M5 one day too. Park all 3 of my generation M5's together in my garage one day. It'll be tough deciding which one I'm going to drive every day. Lol!

The E60 M5 in manual originally wasn't able to turn off DSC. There have been several remedies since then to allow it.
