This is based on international treaty, the Minister would be crucified if they tried to interfere. Further more, this is a two way street as Canada often extradites accused criminals from the US. That is not a treaty you want to blow up.

Arresting the CFO of a major multinational is like arresting a visiting statesman. If the shoe were on the other foot the Americans would tell us to go to hell. The Trudeau government now has a few short months at most to straighten this out or else they'll go into an election with several Canadians held hostage and severe trade retaliation from China. Oh, and you can be sure Trump will gang up with Xi to ensure that Trudeau is defeated.

No it's not...diplomatic immunity.

No they wouldn't as they are bound by the same treaty.

The election isn't until next October. This will be long since settled before then. Again the courts are dealing with this....What trade retaliation?

No one cares about Canada and Canada has next to no influence outside of its own borders. Not exactly breaking news haha

Canada is one of the most if not THE most respected country in the world. What Trump doesn't get is if here were to keep Canada close to him we can make it a lot easier for him when working with other countries. We may not be feared but we are respected..the two together ware unstoppable.

it is the U.S. that is flouting international law here...

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opin...l-rule-of-law/

Canada's best bet was to do an "Oops! She slipped through our fingers.". However, I suspect CSIS and the RCMP would have leaked the truth.

China is indisputably a bad actor... They even just took two Canadians hostage... Yet it seems like even now they want to side with anyone and anything opposing POTUS! It really is a disgrace. Canadians should be embarrassed by their leadership prioritizing such pettiness over their national interests.

How has working with other countries been going for Trump

Trump should have kept his damn mouth shut about this issue and let the legal system handle it. The only thing that's embarrassing is our neighbours asked us to do them a favour and have left us holding the bag.

As you've previously said in this thread, we didn't have a choice, the arrest was required under the extradition treaty. We weren't doing the US a favour. And FTR, I agree Trump is a boor and this might all be a political piece of Kabuki Theatre but I don't blame Trump, and I think Freeland and Trudeau have done their fair share of running their mouths to Canada's detriment regarding Canada US relations.
