Mexico

Soooooo, I never ever want to hear about innocent people getting hurt but.....
1-I would never go there for a medical procedure
2-I would never drive across the border
I know this was allegedly a case of mistaken identity.

I just feel like this is one of those things that "you should have known better"

I've been to Mexico City, Cozumel and Tulum and never really found anything dangerous or very troubling personally. Yes there are shady areas there but stay low key, don't flash cash and you'll be fine.

Now, on the other hand... a bordertown is a place no one has any real need to visit... watch Sicario.

I'd say that's a solid policy. I know Mexicans that won't go near the Texas border.

Sicario is a great (yet horrible) movie

I havent been to Mexico since 2006-ish and unfortunately that is probably the last time I'll ever seen it. My wifes friend has family up in the hills who had relatives hung from telephone poles, trees, bridges etc b/c they WOULDN'T join the cartel.

Sad if it's a big misunderstanding and folks got killed not knowing the danger.

To me the story doesn't add up, I don't think we know all the facts yet.

Lol, this!

So apparently one of them went to get a butt lift and the other two went in to buy pharmaceutical drugs to possibly smuggle back into the states

Sounds like a clear case of eff around and find out.

I lived in McAllen in 1981, it seemed pretty safe south of the border for late night parting with girl friends and such.
I went back in 1983 to visit friends, totally different vibe.
I can’t Imagine now!

My god this is starting to look like the Yahoo news comments section. You guys do realize we live in a far more dangerous country than Mexico right? And relative to the total number of tourists that pass through the odds of being kindapped are insignificant right? I find it strange that as soon as an article is published by the news that sensationalizes crime in other countries, people immediately fall for it. And don’t give me the do not travel stuff from the state department. If the US could rate itself, it would probably be a do not travel country itself. I’ve been to Mexico 17 times and will continue to go.

if the US could rate itself in a lot of metrics... it would be at the very bottom...its an ego thing... it is what it is...

Just a perfect example of when I went to an urgent care center not long after the fallout of Covid... the first question was have you traveled to China... umm no, but I traveled to Miami which at the time was the epicenter of the pandemic all over the news... lol... often it's perception that matters more than reality here.

My best friends good friend went traveling through Mexico - disappeared - was finally found dead. Very sad.

I’ve been - the touristy areas seem fine - TJ - not so much.

It’s another Latin American Country besieged with cartels - so you have to take that into some kind of consideration - like many parts of central and south America - it is what it is.

Yeah it’s sensationalizing one or a few data points. X person got kidnapped, therefore I am going to get kidnapped. Does that rule apply to plane and car accidents? Can’t wait to do my annual Cancun trip. Will use reasonable measures to ensure I minimize exposure to dangers. If shit happens, so be it. Can’t be a hermit.

Wife's family used to go all the time to TJ for dental work. I never understood. They didn't seem to save enough to justify the trip expense.
ME personally, for the type of dental work they were having done, there is no way I want to travel in the back of a car for 3+ hours after waiting to get thru the border for 1.5 hours as the novo wears off.

But I'll travel with my wife/family as a tourist any day.
