This is Blue. He is a 9 week old weimaraner and already 21 pounds. We picked him up yesterday from a breeder in southern IL who met us part way in Kansas City. Then made the trek back to Minneapolis last night. He is hanging with me while I work from the kitchen breakfast nook. The 1st night of sleep was good, potty training has some work to do.

You definitely got the snow. Yesterday it was 70° F here, today 30° F...typically it's below freezing for an average. Weird month for sure.

My poor Winston went in today to get what we thought would be 2 teeth removed. The techs and vet were shocked when they saw the bone loss in his x-rays. He had 14 teeth removed today with 10 more to go next month. My wife brushes his teeth almost daily. Vet thinks it is something genetic. Other than 2 teeth and gum irritation around those 2, his teeth looked good.

We feel horrible about it. Our Angus had to have a few removed when he got older, but nothing remotely close to this.

Ginger is going in for a cleaning next month too. I’m not crazy about anesthesia for them but it is necessary for cleanings.

Condolences to Winston.

Curious, how many teeth does that leave him with?

He was supposed to start with 42, but was somehow missing 3, so that's 39.

39 - 14- 10 = 15 will remain. They assured me he will be fine with 15 but really struggling to wrap my head around it.

Did they say it will change his diet or will he eat the same?

He needs to go on soft (canned) food temporarily (2 weeks and then another 2 weeks after the next round) but long-term they say no impact. The vet tech said one of her dogs has no teeth and still eats dry food.

It is difficult to accept he had been in discomfort for some unknown amount of time even though he never showed signs of it. He had bad breath from time to time but the brushing mostly concealed it. He has seen multiple vets over the past 2 years and only recently one noted his dental health because his teeth looked good cosmetically. Needed to have x-rays and vet office cleanings, which we had not yet started (he is 5) because we thought his teeth were doing well and didn't want to put him under anesthesia until it was really necessary.

Several years ago we got 4 or 5 teeth including 1 canine tooth pulled from our cat. The pain medicine they gave us to give her at home made her insane. She became very paranoid and aggressive at the same time so after a day or so we stopped giving it to her.

Like you said, it is very sad to think they are suffering in pain or discomfort for who knows how long before a problem is found. They can't tell us so we have to look and watch for signs, and most importantly, take them to the vet regularly which obviously you do, Rick.

Ugh, had one or two removed from each of our cavaliers but nothing like that. Hope he feels better soon!
