Pulled the Trigger:Canon 40d w/ 18-200 IS Lense

Bought it at best Buy. Great camera, still learning everything about it tho. Definitely tricky, especially if you not use to all that a digital SLR has to offer. But I'm determined to take better pics of my car s mods and of my car details.
My previous camera was a canon sd400, still a canon, but entirely different ballpark, obviously. I look forward to posting pics with it and looking forward to the compliments, complaints, criticism that comes along with it.

Nice! My old camera was a SD400 also and it broke so as you know I bought what I should have got from the start. I ordered online for the best price but I have to wait for it to come sometime by the end of next week or so. I'm looking forward to learning to take better pictures and i can't wait until I get the 18-200mm VR lens. I think VR is the same thing as IS right? Both are intended to reduce vibration?

Nice, I guess that 18-200 is a Sigma lens.

And yes, IS=VR.

Why, out of curiosity, did you get it as Best Buy? I've never seen them have anything approaching a competitive price on cameras.

Canon cleans them for free and you can do it yourself, but the 2 year protection plan is definitely a good reason to buy from a store like BB.

[QUOTE=mach330; how often are you suppose to have them clean? i'm still debating which camera i want....xsi, d60, 40D, or wait for the nikon D90 coming out.[/QUOTE]

You only need to clean a DSLR when you start to see evidence of sensor dust in your images (little black spots usually seen in large areas of uniform color - like sky). I used my 20D for a couple of years before dust became objectionable, but some find they need sensor cleaning monthly. It depends on how frequently you change lenses and how dusty your environment.

As to which camera to buy for your first DSLR: Find one that fits your hands and go cheap. *All* the Nikon and Canon DSLRs are capable of great photos. The higher end ones provide a bit more specialized capability for substantially more money.

so am i, awesome forum.

I have a Canon Rebel XTI with a brand new 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens. I think i'm crazy buying a lens that costs more than the camera lol.. but it's f'n awesome! I heard of new reviews on the 50d soon to come out. I would have loved to get a 5d, but miiight get that 50d whenever it comes out. the canon DSLRs are so cool. I had always liked Nikon, I just hope I'm making the best decision with my interest and photog style.
