Frequent Redline

After each of my new vehicles (18 Forester XT and 19 Crosstrek had a couple hundred miles on them they saw decline a couple times per week after 14k and 5k miles neither used oil.

Curious if others do the same pl

When I bought my new VW VR6, I picked it up on a Tuesday and took it autocrossing on Sunday. Everyone said that it was bad for the motor, but one person said to run it hard from day one so that the rings traveled to the extremes of the bores from rod stretch and momentum.

When I picked up the car after having the second engine installed at 68K miles, I picked it up at the dealer on Friday afternoon and autocrossed it both Saturday and Sunday.

Any one of my friends will tell you about how I picked up my new Audi 1.8T from the dealer, and drove it almost 5,000 miles with five days of autocrossing on it before making the first monthly payment. A few months short of 20 years later and hundreds of ProSolo sidestep-the-clutch-pedal-at-redline launches later, it still has the original engine AND CLUTCH in it! (Look at the rear tire camber shift at the moment of launch):



Mobil1 European Car Formula in all vehicles, BTW. Dropped the pan in the Audi a few years ago on a bet with my mechanic, and it was 100% sludge-free and clean.

Oh, I guess that I should mention that the VR6 engine died prematurely due to a failed plastic oil pump impeller while driving home from work one day.....

All my new cars have been redlined within 100-200km of getting the keys. All had low oil consumption (less than 1L per 10k kms). Just don't redline a cold engine and you'll be fine.

Is there a point to redlining a Subaru? Just asking.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

Lol!!!!! So true. Having owned normally aspirated and turbo Subarus, they don't like to be revved.

When I bought my RX8 brand new 13 years ago, the manual recommended redline wherever possible.
And rotary is one sweet revving engine.

Never understood this mentality. Why would it matter whether is was leased or not? It's still your car and something most people would want to treat right, regardless of ownership mechanism.

Yup, a few redlines within 300 miles on the clock. Works like a charm. Then Redline a day to keep the mechanics away.

My wife dailies a Crosstrek, how the heck are you redlining that thing?

It in no way performs like a performance vehicle to ever get near redline.

LOL..I beg to differ. It has a reputation of being slow but as some above stated. "Breake it in fast and it will always be fast)

I seriously don't know where you are coming from. You put the pedal all the way down and and it hits 6000 rpm at about 47 mph..then it just redlines/shifts etc etc. Faster than you are allowed to go. It shifts between 5100 rpm and 6100rpm

Try it. And get back to me. The XT is the wife's car and a while back I really rung it out with her in it. She said "I didn't know this had a turbo"..OK she never drives the XT more than 50mph

lol you have never driven one with the FA20 250HP Turbo. hint its quicker than the 2.0 Turbo X3. Ask me how I know. Second thought..don't. This engine is rated in Wards 10 best engines 3 times in the last 6 years. No BMW engine has earned that honor.

lol you have never driven one with the FA20 250HP Turbo. hint its quicker than the 2.0 Turbo X3. Ask me how I know. Second thought..don't. This engine is rated in Wards 10 best engines 3 times in the last 6 years. No BMW engine has earned that honor.
Even when I drive the wifes Crosstrek and have to hit the happy pedal hard to get over quick, on ramps etc., the CVT will shift in the 4-5 range and those are rare experiences.

I assume the manual is geared differently on the Crosstrek like anything else, so that could be a possibility, but even so I cannot figure the point of redlining a Crosstrek to 6500 rpm.

What year is your XV?)
My '19 has CVT and honestly it gets to 6100rpm and when it shifts drops to 5100 rpm and continues to do that

The reason to get it in that range is to get all of its hp. The engine supposedly puts down 140+ whp

I assume you are being playful so I will go along.

Our Crosstrek is a '15 CVT and this sucker is in no way a "get all of its hp" kind of vehicle particularly with that grand total of 140 hp as you say.

Same here - 51k miles and 3 years - zero oil consumption. Even though my car is not a full M, I've followed Mike Miller's fluid change schedule, and the M schedule. Beginning with all the fluids (except coolant) @ 1200 miles, then oil @ 2500, then every 5k, manual transmission fluid @ 30k, diff fluid @ 30k and coolant @ 50k.

lol..and I really am not looking for an argument.
The '15 is a previous generation. '18 19 20 is the current generation. I would dubt if there is that much difference. But that's OK.

BTW you bought your wife a well made, and very safe vehicle. And in 2017 Subaru laid out one billion $$$$$ to develop a global plat form with a frame that would take 40% more energy on impact. Subaru Crosstrek scored an almost perfect 200 Point score in the more stringent Japanese crash tests.

I came close to buying the BM X1. I flipped a coin and bought the Crostrek. If either of my Subaru get destroyed. The X1 will be my next vehicle. Then I can be "official" here. :cheers:
