Yes the 50mm f1.8 (aka thrifty fifty) is very popular. For beginners this is a great lens. Although it feels very fragile and the build quality is questionable, for the price its definitely a great lens. It is surprisingly sharp and the ability for low aperture is great.

If you read the reviews you will see that this lens is pretty well known and popular and most people say its great bang for buck.

Heres an example pic i took with mine at f2.0

It's a great lens and great price.

I had it but opt'd for something a little bit more expensive with more usable focal length on a crop IMO (Sigma 30mm 1.4).

I am late to jump in but I would think a 50mm F1.4 would be well worth the extra $$$.

It will only fit Canon cameras. Nikon has its own 50mm I think.

it'll fit if you buy adapter but I believe you lose the a/f function.
