You shouldn't be driving around in a populated area like NYC with your license plates displayed for everyone on the street to see then.

I know blanking it out on the internet doesnt prevent people seeing it on the road, but in the UK it is probably something worth doing. There is plenty of 'cloning' going on the the UK, with A-holes driving round in uninsured/stolen vehicles with other peoples plates on. Result: traffic offences/parking fines/congestion charge fees etc being attributed to poor unsuspecting people. Its OK if you can prove it wasnt you, but can get you in sticky situation if you can't! Particularly big problem in London. I have even heard of people seeing 'their own car' when driving around (ie some tosser with identical car and a copy of your plate). Be worth chasing the guy down and breaking his legs for his effforts!

I DON'T AGREE THAT ONLY BEEMER DRIVERS WITH LOW ENGINE CAPACITIES DEBADGE THEIR CARS. SOME DO IT FOR AESTHETHIC REASONS, OTHERS PREFER TO KEEP A LOW PROFILE TO MASK THEIR CARS FROM BOY RACERS. BEEMER DRIVERS SHOULD DO AS HE OR SHE PLEASES!

What's the difference between getting a glimpse of your credit card numbers while shopping vs. getting a glimpse of your license plate?

If you don't think it's dangerous, please post your credit card numbers on this board please.

I think DTDREW’s point is people on message boards post a lot of information about their cars. This includes mods that aren’t visible like engine changes and upgrades/options. This information isn’t available to the average person driving behind you. But posting the license plate number is like posting an address for thieves to find you. They can just go shopping through these boards to pick out the car with just the options they want (or the mods they want) and through the license plate they will know where to find you.

hmm... I need a silver e90 with premium, sport, CA and nav in the tri-state area... if everyone posts license plates I can find that easily.

All this license-plate blocking when posting pics happened way back in the days. This is what I heard from people "back in the days".

When "tuning" cars became a "Culture"(not just for race professionals, but even between daily drivers for streets), alot of these people communicated through internet, sharing knownledge, what parts to get, how to get it installed, etc etc.

During this process, alot of heavily tuned vehicles were up in internet, and reported stolen. Coincidently, most of the stolen vehicle cases were concluded as "Planned-out-event" among street tuners, and were wondering how they were so well prepared. Few computer fanatics have said it is possible to pull up personal information with license plate number. Especially those who has "sources" from DMV workers/officials, who are able to gain access to database mainframe might've contributed to those stolen cars.

After such rumor(whether this is rumor or true) got around, people freaked out and began hiding license plates when posting their rides up. Some have started this before just for safe sake and prevention measure though.

Also, IIRC, there was an article floating around the internet, police official suggesting not to post such pictures containing vin number or license plate number. After all this, these days people are just over-paranoid not to post vin number or license plate number.

Honestly, I can careless. I post up all my pictures with the license plate number. Occasionally, I would put different license plate on the car for photoshoot(oregon plate isn't the prettiest plate to look at), but I rarely does any of the airbrushing/black-out stuff.

For me, when I've posted pics in the past, I've always cropped out the license plate. Just the thought of having my license plate on the internet accessible to millions of ppl. who could download the photo and keep it forever just doesn't sit well with me.

Agreed, the photos don't look as good with the plate cropped out but I'd rather have peace of mind. I know one guy here had his E90 pics posted on another website without his permission!
I agree. I am sure that there are people that aren't registered users that browse the message boards looking for parts they may need. A new suspension, rims, subwoofers, amp, etc. If they have your license plate number, they know exactly where to shop....

Do you know who to call to activate this? Is it just the general MVA number?

At first I posted plates on the GSR, but then as I had more than maybe 7 or 8 grand in the car, I started to cover it up.

My E90, I'm not doing any hardcore mods do, so I wont be blocking it unless its for a photo session where I dont want to see my nasty pllate.
