Man awarded $2M from BMW due to soft close doors

Maybe we need warning labels not to close car doors on your fingers….

I guess we can say goodbye to soft close doors. That said it happened to my wife in 2017. She accidentally left her thumb in the door of my X5M and it smashed the crap out of it. Pain was so bad she fainted in the front yard 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️. Instead of getting a lawyer she said, well that was dumb and didn’t do it again.

Maybe I don't fully understand the soft close door procedure. I thought you just gave the door a little shove and it closed itself. Why, oh why would one's fingers or hands anywhere near the door edge or latch?

It’s so hard to have enough muscle to close a car door. I have thought this was an utterly worthless option from the first moment I saw it and just one more thing to eventually fail and require repair.

The rear hatch on my GLC300 will stop and go back up if there's the slightest little resistance when it's closing. Just having a shopping bag or one of my storage bins in the path of the hatch is enough for it to stop and reverse. Odd that the soft close doors aren't the same way.

The lawyer giving the ‘thumbs up’ picture in the article had to have been deliberate.

Surprise BMW engineers didn't think about this. The poor guy lost a good chunk of his thumb.

My trunk and windows do the same.

Many manufacturers won't even enable auto-up windows on cars sold in the USA, because they fear being sued by us dumb Americans who do stupid things. They don't consider their anti-pinch systems adequate in our litigation-happy country.....

It's actually an awesome option. We've had it on 2 cars now. It comes in super handy when you have a bunch of crap in your hands and you give the door a shove with your ass to close it. Even when you don't quite make it, the door just synches up without bother. It's one of those options that seems so dumb I til you have it, but then it does it's magic when you have your hands full and it's magical.

I had a rental once that would open the back hatch if you had the key in your pocket and waved your foot under the rear bumper. That was pretty handy.

Yeah never occurred to me they would just keep closing if something was obstructing them. They must design the motor to just power through that obstruction (in this case a finger), which would in fact be a bad design. I’ve seen fingers get closed in car doors the old fashioned way but never saw one severed by it.
