It depends how you define the model.

The 6 can be three things:

5 series Coupe

7 series Coupe

Its own exclusive vehicle.

ALL THREE ARE JUSTIFIED DEPENDING ON WHAT ANGLE YOU LOOK AT THE CAR FROM.

Read the thread and you'll see great arguments for all three.
Well...yes and no.

There's no arguing about it, it's a 5 series-based coupe.

It's based off the same chassis, and if you go by the generational nomenclature, it has the proper designation to be a 5 series coupe.

e90 - 3 sedan
e91 - 3 wagon
e92 - 3 coupe
e93 - 3 cabrio

e60 - 5 sedan
e61 - 5 wagon
e62 - 6 coupe
e63 - 6 cabrio

Makes sense, doesn't it?

If there was to be a 7 series-based coupe, it'd be an 8 series.

Unbelievable. People really think the 6 series is a different platform even though it has identical suspensions, power trains, equipment, wheels, brakes, wheelbase.

The 6 is closer to a 5 series than the E class is to the E sedan, because the E sedan is built on the C Class platform (and has identical wheelbase and platform to the C Coupe). The 6 is a 5 Coupe in a true sense.

If you want BMW to have a coupe built on the 3 series platform with a 5 series like price, they will have that soon too - it will be called the 4 series. But that will have a 3 series platform and a 5 series price, whereas the 6 series has a real 5 series platform and a higher price.

Moving from a 6 series to a 5 series just two weeks ago, I can say that the 6 clearly is derived from a 5 series. However, that does not say much. The way the car is designed is what attracts a certain buyer. The 6er is a GT Coupe that concentrates in giving the driver and 1 passenger a luxurious but sporting experience. I think when someone speaks of 5 series coupe they imagine a more usable 4 seater that is able to do some of the practical things a 4 door 5 series does, but the 6 series does not. When you consider that the 3 series has better rear seats than the 6er, you realize that the 6 is not quite a 5 series coupe.

I loved my e63 to pieces and miss it every day, but it simply was not a car that can handle duties as every day car in a family with kids. The moment my daughter was born I realized the 6er's days we're counted, even though a couple of days before her birth I was vehemently defending the utility of a car that simply could not take my wife, my daughter and me out of the hospital at the same time. For this reason I do think there is room for a proper 4 seater coupe that is practical, yet sporty. That would also allow the 6er to move up a bit and concentrate in the luxo-coupe market, and maybe even become a two seater. If BMW had a sporty coupe that could seat 4 people in relative comfort, I would have gotten one of those instead of the F10.

My two cents.

If you want a 4-seater coupe BMW has already released one...6-series Gran Coupe...

5 Series coupé is the 6 Series effectively. A6 coupé is A7 (sort of). Mercedes E Class... bugger!
