And this is why good things don't last....
Remember when Costco used to have a very good electronic return policy? Of course the bottom feeders in society took it upon themselves to abuse this policy. So now Costco has a 90 day return policy on electronics.
Well, this is another situation of killing a good thing: https://nypost.com/2018/01/10/woman-...co-in-january/ |

A friend of ours and my one of my son's baseball and wrestling coaches is the bakery manager at our local Costco. Ran into him picking up our kids at the after-school robotics club yesterday. I brought this up while chatting with him.
He said it's not uncommon. He said they get 10-12 back every year. Also said it's the same thing with snowblowers in the spring and patio furniture in the fall. He said people have tried to bring back a sofa/loveseat set after two years because they didn't like the color and in one case, somebody tried to return a mattress after eight years because it was "sagging". |

I once saw a person returning a Christmas tree the week after the holiday.

I don't know if I saw this story in BP or somewhere else, about someone returning snowtires to Nordstoms. The irony, of course, was that Nordstroms has never sold tires.
The store in question had taken over the retail space where a Sears (?) had been, and an older customer had come in not realizing a new store had replaced Sears. Amazingly, they issued a refund for the tires. |

For many shops, a gracious return policy is what made folks comfortable shopping there. But due to the abuse over the years, it seems that all stores are slowly changing their ways. Same goes for Lowes and Home Depot.

Agree, it usually takes a few days to decide if you like the item or not. 90 days is very generous either way. |

My "new" dashcam from Amazon was clearly a return that was repackaged. The original tape seal was taped over again with a new seal. Everything is there and it appears to be new, so no big deal. I've returned a thing or two to Amazon over the years, so I'll take the good with the bad, so to speak.

I get this shit with my tire business all the time. Especially on Amazon. Assholes asking to return a tire after 6 months because "item is defective" so let me get this straight, you drive on the fucking tire for 6 months, hit a pothole and blow it up and now I'm suppose to get you a new tire? Go fuck yourself!
Luckily my business partner handles most of the customer service |

So I know a guy that totally abused that TV return/warranty policy. He was directly responsible for ruining that for everyone. He would buy a TV and return it a fucking year later citing some non-existent problem. Of course they don't have that model anymore so he would basically just upgrade to whatever else they had at the same price point. I tried to dissuade him (especially when we work in a consumer industry where people pull similar antics) and his response was "if they don't like, they should change it". So they changed the policy.

That people were buying automatic omega watches at Costco pulling out the eta movement and replacing with cheapo Russian movements, then returning the watch?
Heard that at Nordstrom women were buying expensive cosmetic creams, scooping out all the cream and replacing it with drug store crap, then saying they had allergic reactions to the expensive cream. Nordstrom had to return the returned items to the manufacturer who tested them for refunds and determined this is what had been going on. |

Yeah, there are people that abuse the system all the time. I used to work at a company that asked me to buy a new tool from home depot (I think it was a hand drill), then put back the old one and return in. They said, people that process returns never even open the box. I was like fck that, if you want to do it then you do it. And I think someone actually did that, but to me that is like the most low thing you can do.
I believe the best option for companies would be to track all returns to person via ID / and if you do that kind of crap, and I believe some already do it. Also, most companies have lax policies which get abused sometimes, but I believe they should get more real and stop doing it. Of course, if you have more buys than returns with lax return policy it might pay off. |

Secondly, this might be true outside of the US but it sure is not the case in the 50 states. Returns cost money. The refund employees are getting paid. What about all the food that gets returned and thrown out? I guess they just "write it off". Lol |

Dammit. That's why my artificial tree is losing needles. I knew that couldn't be right.
