I saw it on the news this morning.
What a shame, especially at such a young age.

His addiction to pain medication, alcohol and drugs probably had something to do with his death.

RIP

This is a possibility given his past.

From my link:
“No drugs were found at the scene, sources said, but a source told The Times prescription medications were recovered at the home and hence toxicology will be part of the investigation.”

Always a shame when people who provide so much enjoyment to other people can't seem to find peace and fulfillment for themselves. RIP

He was open about his struggles with substances, I hope that he helped others reach out for help.

Toxicology takes time to come back. I'm going to put money on opioids and likely alcohol. Soaking in his hot tub, passed out and bon voyage.

Might be the rum talking and just got out of the hot tub....I almost always have a life guard with me though....and no opioids.

I wasn't a big fan of Friends, but too young.

I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt and say he drown 'till we know for sure. Plus, there's this: Matthew Perry, ‘Friends’ actor, dies of apparent drowning at 54

And yeah, never watched "Friends" either. Not my cup of rum... um, tea.

PS - of course who knows what he was on (if anything) to make him drown in a hot tub. Toxicology report, as mentioned, will tell us for sure what was in his system.

I'm not suggesting he didnt' drown, I'm just saying most 54 year olds don't drown in hot tubs without other mitigating factors. I'm not judging him BTW, just my experience talking. I could be wrong, I have been before. Still too young to die in my opinion.

Yep, I'm 68 and I'm too young to go. Got lots more to do.

And not saying you were judging him. You have the right to your opinion, plus, as you said, you have experience in this field.

My younger brother died from a massive heart attack at 55. It happens to folks that age even if it seems like they're too young. I read earlier that Perry had been struggling with alcoholism since he was 14. Something is very wrong when a 14 y.o. kid is already having such issues. It's amazing he was able to build and maintain a successful career despite that rough adolescence.

RIP

My mother died in her 40s from heart attacks and strokes and never drank or did drugs. It happens, but it's not normal.

Sure, with a life like his, anything can happen to you.

From this piece in the NY Times today (https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/29/a...dler-bing.html):

"'I wanted to be famous so badly. You want the attention, you want the bucks, and you want the best seat in the restaurant. I didn’t think what the repercussions would be.' Those repercussions included the enabling of his addictions and the loss of any anonymity."

It's always been clear that stardom can be a very tough row to hoe. Given how success is generally measured, it's worth noting that Mr. Perry died with an estimated net worth of $120 million.

RIP, Matthew Perry.

His character on friends - during the last era of tv where many Americans watched the most successful shows together was the funniest character of the show. Talented guy, fought a nasty addiction evidently, hope he knew The Lord. RIP.

There would have to be a contributory reason for an otherwise able bodied adult to drown in a hot tub.

This sounds like it might represent a rather common occurrence of terminal submersion drowning. Something (either natural disease, or medications/drugs/ethanol) makes an individual unable to self-rescue from water. I see this rather frequently with pools, bathtubs and hot tubs.

Toxicology can take weeks to get back. And there’s no guarantee that results will be made public. Some jurisdictions consider death records and autopsy reports public and others keep them private and only available to family.

Disclaimer: I have no knowledge of this case as it was outside of my jurisdiction of practice and I have had no contact with the medical examiner assigned this case.

When I was doing death investigations in Toronto it wasnt' uncommon for toxocology reports to take 3+ months.

Either a widow maker heart attack (extremely common for men 45-65) or drugs again.

To think about how well he acted comedically on Friends while going through such life struggles is amazing, he was seriously funny.

Some may find this as a joke but I'm serious too, it might be a good idea for people who own hot tubs and have the propensity/history for this potentially happen, to install a seat belt.
