How long do you let your M2 cool down ?
Hi Everyone,
How long do you let your M2 cool down after a spirited drive? Usually depending on how hard have I driven, I let her cool down from 30s to 2/3 minutes. If the the car is at just before 120*C it's 2/3 minutes but when it's at 70*C than 0->30s. Please tell me about what is your opinion about this. |

Makes no difference. The water pump will run when you turn the car off to lower the temps some.

My 2012 Audi did it, I would be absolutely astounded if the M2 doesn't as well.

So the next time I go through my neighborhood at 100mph and powerslide it in my garage, I should wait a little before I turn the car off? Good to know

Water pump runs specifically to cool the turbo. They have done this ever since the N54 came out. The turbo spins down very quick. We are not in the 80's any more with crap oil.

Oil does a much better job cooling the turbo than water. Take the oil away from the turbo and see how long water will keep the turbo running. Yes, I know it's for the bearings. In other type of equipment there is a oil pump timer to run an oil pump specifically for the turbo. Running water is for that number of people that don't know how to take care of their equipment and the manufacturer had to step in for the morons and save themselves costly repairs before the warranty expired. I'm sure your engine would also be fine without oil oh, let's say for 20 seconds as it winds down without oil. I'm sure only water circulation will help it from preventing it to seize. Turbos will always run after the engine is shut down. How long they run without oil is completely up to the owner. One reason I would think twice buying a used turbo car. |

To be honest, I wouldn't worry about it. BMW's believe it or not are sometimes purchased by non-enthusiasts that may not even be aware the car has a turbo. I would be willing to bet BMW is aware of this and gone to great lengths to insure the turbo is protected enough to avoid issues that would end up being warranty issues.

We can blah, blah, blah this too death. After a spirited drive let the engine idle for two minutes before shutting off the engine if you give a **** about your car. If you're going to sell your scrap after a couple of years and are clueless, don't worry about it.

[QUOTE=hogger453;22344851]How do you know the oil was crap in the 80's?
Are you serious?? There is a ton of information about the advantages of synthetic oils that are used today over conventional oils, not to mention the fact that turbo technology has changed a ton in 30 years. I had a turbo Nissan 200SX that was nothing short of a lemon and had less than 40,000 miles on it. It makes sense to let a turbo charged car to sit for a couple of minutes after running it hard but lets not get silly. |
