So lets say Bottas has decided to retire at the end of this season.
You are Toto Wolff and have to pick a replacement with an eye to being the team leader when Hamilton retires.
You can't have Verstappen as he has a long contract with RB.
But you can have any of the other current drivers.
So who do you pick to replace Bottas?

RIC is seasoned, fast and motivated and has enough years ahead to be the elder statesman of MB F1.

Leclerc is really impressive lately but not an option for the same reason as Max.

I think I'd take a chance on Leclerc.
He has been pretty exceptional in the Ferrari against 4xDWC Vettel.
His last drive in Portugal was unreal...only 30 secs behind Verstappen in a car that lacked any kind of straight line speed.

I honestly think PER is really underrated. I’m a VET fan, but I think Racing Point is making a big mistake with that driver swap.

Indeed, RUS really screwed up....I wonder if part of the issue for RUS and ALB (and all others, of course) was the cooler weather which equals low track temp and low adhesion....and VSC and SC periods when the tires lose operating temps....

I think Russel's misfortune in timing a rear tyre warm up with a bump in the track was forgivable...he very rarely makes mistakes.
He looks very strong against Latifi but the general consensus seems to be that Latifi is a bit out of his depth...so its tough to know how good Russel really is.
He would be my second choice at Mercedes after Leclerc (as per the conditions set out in the first first post).
Its going to be interesting to see how Leclerc fares against by Sainz next season.
