Alonso to Renault

The news is that on Wednesday Renault will announce Fernando Alonso to be driving alongside Ocon in 2021.

I honestly think it's ridiculous and he should start looking into something other than F1. A young driver in a team trying to resurrect itself makes sense. It looks like it's working well for Norris and McLaren. I would also say the same thing for Kimi and Vettel if he didn't move to Mercedes. There's plenty of talent in F2 and F3. Young blood will make the sport more exciting than hearing "gp2 engine" and whining all the time (this goes for Vettel and Kimi too).

Because I would choose Zhou or Sirotkin or Lundgaard over Alonso any day of the week!

I think Alfa needed Kimi’s experience in helping to develop the car. Maybe Renault is hoping for the same with Alonso. Mclaren’s car was really good in 2015-16. Just no power. Clearly Renault could be doing better given that Mclaren is running their engine and doing much better.

Alonso has a way of driving that no other driver uses. His turn-in is aggressive and uses the understeer to wash off entry speed then hard slams the throttle when the car is pointing in the right direction. Developing a car to his desire is disaster to his teammate.

This is very true, I read the article about Alonso's driving style recently. Such a waste then. George Russell deserves a good seat.

Peter Windsor said in his vlog that he had reliable sources telling him that Russel will stay in Williams for one more year then he's moving to Merc

Alonso's return

Really a daft move on both sides. Makes no sense at all.

Forgot about that too. A former team mate, can't remember who, commented on this. He reckoned the car was handling terribly.

I hope this is true. I think Russell has some serious talent that has yet to be seen. Russell v Leclerc v Max v Lando. The next 5-10 years of racing is going to be great.

You forgot Alex. He's been really good flying under the radar until Hamilton murders him 😂

Advantage to all other teams. As Alonso will make it a F2 car again and blaim everybody but himself.

I apologise for my first required forum post.

You guys crack me up with the whining about Alonso.

He's a proven talented driver that gets the most out of whatever he drives. He brings technical skills to the team. AND he has PR/marketing skills.

From a team perspective, it's a no brainer.

2022 has rules changes, so pretty much anyone can come out with a good car. And that's when we will hopefully see racing.

Or do you guys have experience that would indicate differently?

after successful Renault days, Alonso brought wired environment wherever he went.. i agree he is talented driver but stories with drivers dont end up only with talent.. he had some big big ego problems in the past and im not sure he got rid of it now.. and after the scene i ve added Alonso became a pathetic champ to me.. in my opinion he never was a team player.. we ve seen it many times..

this dialog showed me how problematic character he had become.. i disgusted Alonso after this dialog.. he was a like person looking down to anyone and anything.. maybe he is a different person now will see even if i really dont think so.. there is an interview he s already wearing Renault tshirts today.. i only see this as Cyril Abiteboul's last attempt for leading the team.. he is having problems leading the team to success in my opinion.. and money never was a problem for Renault.. and he went for such a choice with hopes of improving the car and deep inside to say: see i even brought back our last champion and didnt work as well.. dont fire me.. move..

Nobody said he didn't bring baggage with him.

But he's a racer and people like to watch him. He'll put asses in seats.

He'll help with development.

He'll put the car on camera, which helps with sponsor money.

As I said before, it's a no brainer.

Ok, you got me on that one. But let's keep it to a minimum :-)

What can we expect from Renault once he's there???? Not sure. What did he bring to his last team? Are you willing to give any of McLaren's current performance to the time he spent with them?

Like I said earlier, new rules should help shuffle the deck a little, and we can only hope that brings about more competitive racing.

Nope, you can thank Andreas Seidl for that. Just look at what he did for Porsche in WEC.

Renault's biggest problem, IMHO, is Cyril Abiteboul. He Just doesn't seem to get the job done.
