This thread is all over the freakin' place. $6 bottle from wal mart to $90 bottle way out of my budget.

You know there are some GREAT wines out there in the $12-$20 range.

What's sad is when the barefoot taste better than wine costing much more. Price and pictures are that last parameter to judge a bottle of wine. If you can't afford an expensive bottle then you can age your own.

Not all wine is meant to be aged. Especially "cheaper" wine.

There are so many terrific (and relatively inexpensive) wines in the world today that there’s absolutely no reason to drink plonk. For me it’s not so much the vintage or varietal, it’s the producer and terroir (all other things being equal). A competent producer makes very good wine even in off years by routinely declassifying the inferior fruit. While in no way is this a comprehensive list, these are among my favorite (affordable) wines by region:

From Australia (Barrosa and McLaren Vale), my favorite 3 producers are Mitolo, Torbreck, and Yalumba.

From California, my favorite 3 producers are Todd Anderson (St. Helena), David Ramey, and Helen Turley.

From France, my favorite 3 producers are Chateau Lascombes (Margaux), Chateau Quinault L'Enclos (St. Emilion), and Chateau Saint Pierre (St. Julien).

From Germany (Mosel-Saar-Ruhr), my favorite 3 producers are Dr. Loosen, J.J. Prum, and Selbach Oster.

From Italy (Piedmont), my favorite 3 producers are Domenico Clerico, Bruno Giacosa - the Professor of Nebbiolo (for very special occasions), and Luigi Pira. I especially enjoy single vineyard Barbarescos from the Rabaja region of Piedmont. These are my favorite table wines overall.

all great wines under 40.

I could go on and on. my neighbor owns a wine store. I try nearly everything either through wine tastings or wines he personally wants to try on his own but are to much to taste at the store.

I have a very good friend who is a wine store manager. He is also an audio guy. He gives us the dates that the wine reps are scheduled to come to the store. He keeps the opened bottles and later that day we get together, listen to music and sample (pronounced: drink) wine.

Not much of a wine drinker, but prefer whites over reds when I do. Lately, this one's been my favorite:

Gewurztraminer 2008. Tinhorn Cree k. Oliver, British Columbia, Canada

Extract from their web site:

Tasting Notes:
Full bodied and vibrant with tropical, melon, peach, pear, apple, honey, and vanilla flavours. The aromas are similar to the flavours, but also include some spice and floral notes.

Wine Specs:
Vintage 2009
Varietal Gewürztraminer
Appellation Okanagan Valley
Harvest Date Sept 15-17, 2009
PH 3.25
Aging 1-2 years
Bottling Date March 23-24, 2010
Residual Sugar 8.62 g/L
Alcohol % 13.3

Justin Cab is as good as it gets under $150 for cabs and it's under $25. For a really unique experience try their petit verdot. Very few wineries produce a single varietal petit verdot and it is a special wine. Also around $25.

Agree. Defining the price of a cheap wine is not easy. Some French wines that cost $12-16 I consider horrible, Chile wines in this price range are pretty good.

I learned that the best advice is from the mom & pop liquor store. I have 3 and one is my ex cousin in law who gives me a family discount of 20%. Since then I have not had a bad bottle. It's important to establish a friendly relationship and become a regular then they don't sell the crap they are forced to carry. Sadly, the most expensive of the 3 is the one who sells all beer known to mankind.

I could only find 1 bottle at $60. Can it be mail ordered at your price.

You can order directly from the Winery:
http://store.justinwine.com/index.cf...C.DisplayOrder Asc, P.ProductName ASC&ShippingState=TX

$30. I'm a club member there and I think the price for members is about $26 or so.

Edit: I probably shouldn't be marketing this, they sell out every year and I have to fight with them to send me library selections from previous years.

You can join the Justin wine society and get better prices. It's free to join but you have to commit to buying a certainl amount each year, not much but I don't remember what the minimum is. I think I end up with 3 to 4 cases from them each year of different wines. The standard cab, petit verdot and deborah's delight are my favorite.

I like the fuZion red or white from Argentina just under $8- / bottle up here in Canada. Good quality for the price.
