Lightbulb $35k Tesla

Given the info out there by Mr. Musk

By 2017 a cheaper model called the Model 3 will be released. It will be in the $35k range and compete with the 3 series, A4s, and C300s.

How many plan to pick one up as a DD?

Keep in mind it will have all the capabilities of a Model S just not the same size nor will it have a 0 to 60 of 2.8.

My best guess is that it will be $35k without any EV tax incentives.

Other predictions:
- Model 3 will come with autonomous or semi-autonmous driving capabilities
- Come with more technology standard
- By 2017 I expect the supercharging network to be even more well developed making it easier to charge

So this car I have never seen, don't know when it will hit the market, the selling price, size, performance, range?

Not that excited at this point.

Most likely will have the same charging capabilities of the Model S meaning it can be charged on a 240v which does not cost that most to have an outlet installed in your garage. Keep in mind that the average charge per KW can range from 9 cents to 15 cents depending on your location.

I think the GF and I are going to look at them to replace her Jetta. I would get one but we dont have the space for 3 cars and I need something sporty.

I like Tesla and I think the company is doing great things but I always get a sense that Musk tends to over-promise and under-deliver.

If the Model X is of any indication, the Model 3 will end up coming out sometime in 2022 and will cost $55k.

You provided a lot of guesses and estimates.

All of the capabilities of the Model S but smaller and slower? The $75k Tesla Model S 70D does 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and has a range of 240 miles (from Tesla), at less than half the price it will take more than cheap batteries to make this happen and have anywhere close to the same capabilities.

Also, if they have a model that actually costs $35k (still an estimate of a car that hasn't been built) there have been many cases where the starting price isn't close to one that most people want to own. See the starting price of $33k for a 3 series and compare it to the one you actually want to buy.

Majority of the cost of a Model S is the battery itself. Hence why they are creating the gigafactory.

You're right who buys a 3 series with no options + accessories

So are people just interesting in this car because it's electric? The Model S isn't exactly a good looking car, but getting excited about a car you haven't even seen yet. I don't get it.

I don't like to predict things usually but I will predict this 35000 ev will not be a good quality vehicle.
I still don't get why people even buy that damned Prius other than they feel like they are making a difference on our carbon footprint(FYI they are not)
But hey I may just be surprised after all!

Don't get me wrong, I like the model S, but I think I'll stick with real engines for the time being.

Well if you hate driving in traffic, hate the morning commute to work, and all the other downsides to driving then I think autonomous driving capabilities would be something a lot of people would enjoy.

To each their own my friend. Everyone has different tastes and thats what makes the automotive industry great.

The main point I was trying to make was this would make a great DD (if you have the capital) and I wanted to see how the BMW community views electric vehicles.

With the release of Tesla's patents I'm interested in seeing how a large automotive manufacturer like BMW with its capital, R&D, and man power can out do Tesla. I'm interested in the improvements of the i3 and i8 over the next couple years.

On a side note: love the car!

Drive on I-66 everyday in the DC metro area on the way to and from work. It'll sound a lot less hellish then.

Don't get me wrong I love driving when the roadways are open and the weather is nice but on the daily commute where I'm sitting in traffic? Not so much.

The only promising thing about the autonomous driving technology is that, theoretically, if all cars during rush hour were running on it, it would effectively eliminate congestion.

Tesla is far from the automaker working on autonomous driving. Also, doubtful it will completely alleviate congestion because some of it is caused by too many cars on roads without capacity to handle the traffic. There is also some due to road construction. Cars will need to follow further away from the car in front and still need to change lanes to exit. It could alleviate some of wasted time for the driver who can think about other things but hard to see it becoming driving nirvana. Things will still be clogged up you just won't need to focus as much attention on driving.
